My DD is one week old today. She has fed well, as far as I can tell, since birth. Problem is that she hasnt poo'd since day 4. Saw mw on day 5 who wasn't concerned due to number of wet nappies eg she had 8 yesterday. There is lots of activity in her nappy but whenever I check it turns out to be just wind. Saw osteopath yesterday who said her tummy felt soft. My milk only came in on day 5 if that's relevant. Going to phone mw later today but any suggestions/info in meantime. Thanks
PS sorry for typos/shortness of info - feeding and typing with wrong hand

Don't panic, its normal for breastfed babies (though on the more unusual side of normal). My LO didn't poo for a week after day 4 and subsequently only went every 4-7 days til weaning. As long as there are lots of wet nappies and you are exclusively breastfeeding its ok. Brace for a poonami when the time comes though!!

Hi my baby was the same as smaths too! BF produces less waste so not uncommon. Do keep mentioning to MW team and you could always do some baby massage if it makes you feel better.

Congratulations on your baby x

Many thanks to you both, it's good to hear it's not uncommon, there is so much to worry about! DH and I did discuss the explosion that's likely to come! Probably today during out visit to her 100yo great granny I expect! Forgot to mention in first message that I'm exclusively breastfeeding and she lost 7% of birth weight.

Congratulations on your new DD and hope the party went well yesterday?

7% isn't unusual but if she looses anymore you may want a MW or BFC to watch you do a complete feed.

I would be looking to get more help with BF, no poo in the first 4week's is a sign baby may not be getting enough milk. Older Bf baby's can go day's inbetween feeds but in the early week's it's improtant that they go at lest twice a day as well as lots of wet nappies.

Has a midwife observed a hole feed frome start to finish? I would ring them and ask for more BF support, if your not confident with they midwife you should be able to ask to see the infant feeding co-ordiator at your local hospital.

It's important you get this help now in order to make sure everything is in order.

I agree with MigGril. No poo for three days in a week old baby is unusual and may be a cause for concern.

Is the mw coming to see you today?

Hi, the midwife isn't coming until Tuesday, I guess due to bank holidays. As smaths predicted, we have had something of a poonami this morning as well as a little bit last night. I went to a bf group on tuesday where a whole feed was observed. Was told she is swallowing well. I feel I still need to refine latch however as sometimes fine, sometimes left with nipples that are a little sore - I'm still suffering from carpel tunnel so think I'm not holding her in right position sometimes. She is also sometimes fussy at left breast but alright on right. Any suggestions about this? TIA

Glad she is pooing now, but agree with the others that you may want to ring the MWs and ask them for more support with bfing especially if you are feeling sore sometimes.

As for being more fussy on one side, you may want to try the football hold, see here or google biological nurturing.
