Dry/chapped lips and breastfeeding

fhdl34 · 31/03/2012 22:35

I'm breastfeeding and my lips have become incredibly dry. My lipbalm is having no effect in moistening them and I'm wondering if perhaps I'm not taking in enough fluids myself.
Has this happened to anyone else and what did you do? It's driving me nuts!

Use lansinoh if you have some!, it's fab on lips as well as nipples. Maybe try upping your fluid intake as well.

Was just going to say lanisoh - expensive but it stays put all night and gets my sore dry lips back to scratch. Oh, and drink loads if water too!

I read somewhere that lanisoh works but when I tried it didn't seem to work that well, although I didn't try it for long. I'm trying to up my fluids but been poorly last couple of days and cupboard is now bare so really need some squash (gone right off plain old water). Will try the lanisoh again but my lips actually hurt when I smile, they're so sore.

My dd is 5 weeks old, and my hv commented on my dry lips (er, thanks!). She said I needed to drink more and I guess she was right - my lips improved. Also second lansinoh instead of ordinary lip salve.

I was going to suggest nipple cream too Grin It's also fab for when you have a cold and your nose gets sore from blowing it all the time.

You can use blistex/blisteze (can't remember what it's called) for severely chapped lips.

Does sound like you might be dehydrated. Get some squash! If you don't like plain water, try chilling it - it always tastes nicer to me then. Keep a sports bottle near you and keep sipping it.

I have been a bit slack with the whole drinking issue. I have 6 sports bottles which are usually filled with squash and kept in the fridge but just got lazy about actually drinking them Blush. Goin shopping shortly so will stock up on the squash. Put lanisoh on for bed last night and defo lasted longer than normal lip balm so will continue with that as well.
