For about four days now ds2 (5mo) has lost interest in bf. He is ebf and refuses a bottle. He shows no signs of being hungry, so I have been offering him the boob every couple of hours, he fusses, sucks for maybe a minute then stops. He feeds longer at night, maybe twice, but that's it. Is this normal? Do I need to do something? I'm at a bit of a loss and worried!

Is he getting distracted and coming off to look round?

Debs75 · 22/03/2012 19:08

Is he coming down with something?
I would say this isn't normal if he is basically having nothing to eat at all during the day.
Apart from that I'm not too sure what to do apart from keep offering him the breast and maybe express some so a) your supply doesn't start to dip and b) to see if he will take it from a cup. Uou don't have to do bottles if he doesn't like them, dd3 didn't and started on the 'straw' bottles at 8m with her meals

He's not getting distracted, no. He pulls of and arches his back as if he's trying to get away Sad.

I guess he may be coming down with something, hard to tell. But he has a 7yo big brother, so very possible! I feel constantly full, as he's not emptying anything ever! That's a good point about supply dipping, I hadn't thought of that. I can express, how often do you think I'd need to? Can't imagine doing it after every attempt at a feed! I can't freeze my milk though it goes soapy Sad. I feel like I'm being rejected.

Could be a developmental thing as well as distraction or maybe teeth. Have a read hear

Lots of info to help with nursing stickes.

MigGril · 22/03/2012 20:42

In the mean time just keep offering don't worry to much about expressing as if he's feeding at night well then he probably is still getting enough. You only need to worry if his nappy's get significantly dryer.

Sounds a little like DD when she had a cold a few weeks ago. I caught it soon after and had a sore throat. Could it be that?

I might be making this up but do they sometimes go off their feeds when teething too?

lookout · 22/03/2012 21:28

IThink, he is definitely teething. Haven't noticed any difference with nappies but will keep an eye out. If they do get dryer, what do I need to do?

Will have a look at kellymom, thanks MigGril. I am worried though

I would express 2-3 times a day, If he is feeding in the night are you waking feeling full? If so express then and then maybe after lunch and before bed. Just try and fit it in with your routine. DOn't panic if you don't get loads as expressing isn't a measure on what you produce when he is feeding. I struggle to express but I know I have enough to feed two dd's
