Hi ladies what are your views on follow on milk? My daughters 6 1/2 months now and I'm wondering whether to move her onto it or not? I've heard it's not worth doing as its not much different to 1st baby milk, shes on SMA gold ATM and is fine on it. Any advice will be much appreciated! :)

1st milk is fine, follow on was only invented to get around advertising bans. If she is happy on her milk then you don't need to change it.

I would have said what Indiith said . My ds was fine on 1st milk until he went on to cows milk at 1yr.

Great, thanks for your replies! think I will just keep her on 1st milk! Smile

I have 3dds, with the first two I just kept them on SMA Gold until 1 year, however with dd3 I moved her to follow on milk at 6 months purely for financial reasons. It can be sold at promotional prices, discounted, and I can get "points" on loyalty cards for the amount spent.

I don't feel that dd3 benefited in any way from the follow on milk nor did it harm her but tbh it made a difference to my budget, she wasn't the best eater and was quite reliant on bottles so I used quite a lot.

Yeah that's what I've noticed they have them on offer etc whereas the 1st milk is never on offer, did you still use SMA or another brand? And was the change over easy for her?

I still used SMA but I ran out of formula when we were on holiday and was able to use a different brand for a week, then switch back to SMA - it didn't bother her at all. I'm not a great believer in the Oh you shouldn't change brand, imo its just a scare tactic used to keep you with your usual brand.

She had absolutely no bother switching to the follow on milk, and she is now 13 months and I switched her to cows milk at 12 months with absolutely no bother either.

Some babies can get constipated on follow on milk whilst others don't. There are no extra benefits to follow on milk except for the financial ones that wrigglerock talked about. It's really up to you. If you still have 1st milk just carry on until your tin is finished. You could get some ready made cartons of follow on to see if your DD likes it because if she doesn't you don't want to have wasted your money on a whole tin then if she does you could buy more.

1st or infant milks aren't legally allowed to be sold at reduced prices or on special offers and neither are you allowed to receive incentives to buy them (like points) and they aren't allowed to be advertised. It's all to do with protecting breastfeeding.
