What happened? Sleep related

My almost 6 month old has decided that he no longer needs sleep. He went from 9 or so hours a night up to 2 weeks ago and now he wakes in the night EVERY HOUR.
He recently started solids, barely an ice cube size of purée twice a day mostly just as tasters, and he has had a bit of a cold. Apart from that nothing has changed.
Is this normal? Please let me know if you have any tips for us, he sleeps in our room in his cot and we are so tired I think I'm having an out of body experience.
Thanks.

PS I'm BF, but he is not always looking or a feed when he wakes. Sometimes h wants to play and screams if he does not get his way. We do not know how to settle him back don.

It could well be the solids as it does take their tummies quite a while to get used to them. Try going back to bf full time for a little while and re-introducing the solids again gradually. We did this with DD and it worked really well.

Thanks for your reply.
Sorry to be a bit thick but how gradually should I introduce solids? Once a day, one every few days?

I have a book called Your Babycare Bible that suggests starting with one meal of solids a day and sticking to the same food for three days at a time. Seems to work for DD.
