First milk or follow on?

DS is almost 1 and started nursery last month. I'm still BFing but he has formula at nursery during the day 3 times per week.

He's becoming less interested in BFing now he's eating a lot of solids and I feel like we've come to the natural end of it, I guess he's self-weaning.

At the moment the formula he has is first milk. I'd still like him to have formula rather than straight cows milk for a while as it's got more vitamins and iron. Should I be giving follow on milk at his age? Is there a difference?

Someone on MN said that they only make follow on as they can't advertise first milk but that it's no different. Can anyone enlighten me please?

follow on was invented to get round the ban on advertising first milk. It has more iron in it and can be constipating. I did switch to follow on at around 9 months but only because it was cheaper rather than claims about iron levels.

TBH at age 1 I would just give cows milk - at that age my 2 only had milk at breakfast and before bed so didnt have any milk during the day.
