Any tips to get the mucus stuff out of my brand new newborn?

Hi,

I am currently keeping the rest of my ward awake with a very unsettled baby!!

DS was born at 10pm last night a fed a bit from each side at about 11pm. We came up to the ward at about 2am, and the MWs said to let him go until about 4am before trying to feed him again (unless he woke sooner of course).

Anyway about 3:30am he started looking a bit unsettled so I tried feeding again and although I get the impression he'd quite like to, he's just full of mucous so if he tries he's just coughing up snot!

Any tips to help him clear out?

Thanks Smile, and apologies for typos - one handed phone typing not my forte (yet!)

Congratulations on your new baby! The only things I found that helped were one or two drops of saline solution into each nostril, then a good Hmm suck with a nostril clearing thingy (a bulb aspirator?), while holding the other nostril airtight with a finger. Feels horrible for the poor little thing (I tried it out on me), but does bring the most vile and huge stringy bogies out.
I'm not sure if it's a good idea with a newborn though, given the salt...

Oh my goodness - I'd totally forgotten about the delights of the aspirator!!

Hopefully it's calmed down a bit now - he's coughed up sone cracking stuff (so I've got no sleep while i obsessively watch him Confused) so we'll see how he is when he wakes up....

Hope he clears out his passages soon! I remember reading once that babies in utero are pretty full of mucous and gunk, and that birth sort of squeezes it out to varying degrees, so I expect he'll hawk it up himself gradually. Have fun, and GET SOME REST. Grin

Have you had the newborn hearing check yet? Whatever the HCP was doing to my DS2 prompted him to expel about a gallon of mucous all over her.
He found feeding ok but snored extremely loudly for about a week until it all cleared out of his system, which I found really difficult to sleep through. So much for rest, eh?

Ah yes - we had that yesterday and she warned us that might happen - although fortunately for her he didn't Smile

It does seem to be clearing now though which is good news Smile

Many congratulations on the birth of your new baby.
My 6 week old had this exact issue...quick birth and mucus wasn't squeezed out. Just sort of had to wind him over the course of his first 24ish hours, it just kept coming and at points was quite alarming as he so violently wretched. It cleared within 36 hours and then he got on with feeding...
Good luck!

Congrats on your new baby.
My experience was that I didn't need to do anything; DD2 just coughed it up. Took a couple of days if I remember rightly.

Thank you all Smile

It certainly seems to be clearing, which is great news - both for the feeding and the amount of washing created!! Grin
