3 day old DS doesn't seem to like my left breast. Will latch on and suckle a couple of times but then comes off. He seems to feed so much better from the other side.

Help!

I had the same thing with both of mine to start with. Have you tried different holds? With DS1 I did cradle hold on one side, and the rugby ball one the other, so that he was lying on the same side. One of the midwives suggested he was more bruised on one side than then other, so was a but uncomfortable.

Is it your first? I found it really awkward holding them on one side over the other, but once I got used to it it was fine. Google and try a few different holds.

He is my first. Will give the different holds a try- thanks.

Like you and Belina I had exactly the same issue with DC1. We tried different holds and in the end he seemed to like being held in the same way as when he fed on the other breast, so instead of his legs being across my tummy they were sort of under my arm. This only lasted a short while though and he did get the hang of it, so keep with it Smile.

Have a look at this information from the La Leche League as it explains it far beter than I can and if you are still struggling ask your MW, ask us again or ring one of the helplines. Here is the number for the National Breastfeeding Line.

Congratulatons on your new DS too Smile

How was the birth? Any bruasing which may make it soure for him on that side?

Trying different holds is a great suggestion, trying biological nurtaring possition for such a young baby is also a good idea. Have a google for more info.

Also as you DS is only 3days, have you asked the midwife for any help. If your home they are normaly willing to come out when ever you need them, even in the middle of the night.

Thank you for some great ideas. The link looks very useful and I'll have a go at some of the different positions.

Am due to see the mw tomorrow so will mention it then too.

My DD was exactly the same and even at 9 months still prefers the right side. I've never worked out why and I do always try to offer them both equally. I have used to my advantage as it is the one I always express from. This has formed somewhat of a 'super boob'. If I have another baby I intend to train them to prefer the left in order to balance me out! Wink
Good luck and enjoy your DS

Voyage I have a superboob too, DS2 feeds off both sides, but falls asleep better for his nap feeding off that side, and I let him get away with it a lot. Hoping they will go back to normal eventually
