DD - 1yo - won't drink cow's milk and I want to stop expressing

What do I do? HV said give cow's milk or formula for mid-pm feed (I made her drop mid-am one as can't expressing enough to keep up anymore).
I really don't want to start on formula and really want to give up expressing so I am just feeding her first and last thing.
DD will have cow's milk on cereal ect and will cheese, mad about yogurt. Is that enough diary or does she need to drink cow's milk as well?

You could buy one tub of formula/follow on milk and try that, then gradually add cows milk one oz at a time in each days feed until it is 100% cows milk IYSWIM. Its quite a big leap taste wise to go from breast milk to cows. formula is a t least a little closer.

Are you still giving her any other bf or expressed feeds? If so I really wouldn't worry. In fact with DS I didn't even realise you were supposed to keep mid morning and mid afternoon milk feeds and he dropped these at about 9 mo Blush. He was not a big milk drinker either then and I just gave him a ton of yogurt, cheese, milk on cereal and milk in food like pancakes etc. He hardly drank any milk offered at first (and I dropped breast milk at 11mo) but he slowly got into it and now drinks loads (probably too much now!)

or perhaps you could do 1oz cow, rest breast and introduce it slowly that way?

with lots of dairy in cooking / on cereal etc etc she should be fine.

I stopped Bf my DD at 13mths and she then proceeded to drink NOTHING at all - we tried everything but basically just hid lots of liquid in her food. Then at 15mths I gave her a fruit shoot and she lapped it up Hmm. As a result she was quite precocious in her drinking habits (ie drank choc milk about a year before all her contemporaries - but we were desperate !!)

She's still not a big drinker now, so don't worry about it, just make sure she gets enough dairy through other stuff, and she'll get the idea soon enough.

Would she eat yoghurts or custard? My DS would never drink milk so he just drank waer and got his dairy elsewhere.

At 1 year, an A.M feed, a P.M feed and some dairy products throughout the day is absolutely fine. There is NO need for formula milk. You can continue to offer cows milk but if she doesn't like it then it's not a problem. If you really want her to have cows milk then you can add milkshake stuff to it to get her drinking it and then gradually add less and less until she is having plain milk.

Will she drink water or juice?

Debs75 · 03/03/2012 17:54

If she is getting dairy in her diet then knock the milk on the head. She doesn't need cows milk and can get calcium from other foods.
Dd3(18m) won't drink cows milk, just breast milk and she it's doing great

DS stopped BFing at 15 months and would not touch expressed milk, formula or cow's milk (not even on cereal, or chocolate milk etc). He drank water and some watered-down juice. He started off eating yoghurt & fromage frais but decided by about age three that he didn't like those either. He eat cheese and had some other food with dairy in.

12 years on, he is a strapping 5'10" 13-year-old who still won't drink milk or eat yoghurt. They really don't need it, and it sounds like she has other calcium sources, so I wouldn't stress about it.

BartletForAmerica · 03/03/2012 18:51

I got DS to drink cow's milk by giving him a cup of water with literally 1ml of milk with it. He'd drink that, so next time was 2ml, 3ml, 4ml, 5ml, 7.5ml, 10ml etc. It sounds painful but it only took a week or two and he would drink normal cow's milk.

Thank you all. GP and HV have both suggested follow-on formula and I was a bit Angry about that.
She drinks water no problem at all and doesn't mind cow's milk on cereal.
I would say she is having about three portions of dairy in her food per day, cereal, sometimes yogurt after lunch, sometimes a milky pud like rice pudding after dinner and maybe a mini babybel as a snack.
I want to carry on breastfeeding her, I just am fed up expressing. So getting down to first thing and last thing would be great.
She is not one of those babies who pulls at my clothes or anything but does enjoy her bf and if she sees a bottle (of expressed milk) she will go nuts to get it. She doesn't seem to mind though if I don't offer it though.
