Antibiotic eye drops and bfing

I have tried to look it up but couldn't see the info on the breastfeeding network site. I have sticky eyes possibly from my 2 week old.
Pharmacist gave me antibiotic eye drops. I've used them twice and forgot to read the leaflet till now, and it says not to use if bfing.
Is there any problem with using drops containing propamidine isetionate while breastfeeding? Thanks.

You can phone or email the BfN and they will research it for you.

A quick google suggests that it has not been tested on newborns or breastfeeding women, therefore they cannot say that it is safe, but that OTOH no adverse effects have been reported in those groups.

BTW have you tried breastmilk in the eyes, both yours and his? It's very effective.

Thank you for looking that up ILove, will email them too. Have tried bm in her eyes, which seem to be clearing up, but mine are very red and sore as I am usually a contact lens wearer, so I asked the pharmacist.

Could your sore eyes be due to the lenses, rather than infection? With a 2wo (congratulationsSmile) you could well be tired enough to slip up on hygiene etc. Or do you need artificial tears? My eyes are drier since having dc - don't know if there's a connection - and I needed tear drops.

Try breastmilk in your own eyes, too.

I think it is infection, as I have a lot of green gunk in them, and one was affected at first, now both are. I only use daily disposables so hygiene wise they are quite simple. Will try bm till I hear from BfN though. Silly question but do I use cotton wool to wipe it in my own eyes?! Thanks for the congrats by the way!

BfN's pharmacist have come back to me and said it is fine to use while bfing. I will also try bm for best results!!

When I did it I expressed a few drops onto my fingertip and then quickly dripped them from my finger into my eye by pulling the lower eyelid away just like when putting a lense in. If I needed to put more in, I preferred to express into a cup. That way I didn't mind dipping my finger several times, rather than touch my nipple again with a fingertip that might have carried goodness-knows-what nasty infectious bacteria back from my eye. The breastmilk was very soothing.
