My DS was finally diagnosed with reflux on Tuesday. We've been giving him Gaviscon infant and it's really made a difference. Finally we thought we'd cracked it!! But LO and behold.... He's now constipated :( what do i do now?!?! Poor little man is in so much pain!

Glad you've got a diagnosis and it is improving. The advie on constipation will vary according to how old your DS is and how he is fed.

He's 15 weeks old tomorrow and he's on cow and gate 1st milk (8oz every 3 hours in the day). He's just pooed a bit but he was in pain Sad

I think if you read the carton you can make up his feed with a little extra water, that might help. If he is in pain try no nappy time when he poos or rubbing his back or some tummy massage, if you are unsure how to do it Youtube has some good videos on baby massage. If it is really distressing him though give NHS Direct a call.

I was rubbing his back and it did seem to work. I just hope his system gets used to the Gaviscon. I really don't want him to be refluxy again but, I think that will have to be if his poo's are uncomfortable. Sad

My DD had reflux and gaviscon made her horribly constipated, crying on both sides when she poo'd! We ended up switching to carobel which you can buy over the counter and was loads better (though actually it was ranitidine that sorted her in the end).

He's pooed!!! Was quite a lot aswell and it wasn't hard. That must be a good sign. Why was he straining so hard? I hope hope hope he's ok!

Was he just straining because it was a big poo or actually crying in pain Liams?

LiamsMummyJaz · 18/02/2012 09:38

He never normally cries. So I was just assuming due to the small poo he was having a hard time and was in pain. But he's fast asleep now so it was defiantly poo related. I will have to keep you updated on his bottom business. Just fingers crossed it doesn't change...

Have you had a look at the Reflux Support thread? There are some very avid and wise MNers on there.

No I haven't!!! I will have to investigate. I don't go online I have an iPhone app and it isn't the easiest to use! Thank you Smile

Second the carobel thing, it can be a wonder. Gaviscon is well known for causing constipation although for some reason it's not listed as a side-effect on the packaging inserts.

Hi, my dd was constipated and I changed her to cow and gate comfort for a few weeks. Worked wonders and she pooed so much, once I was happy she was "all clear" I switched back to regular cow and gate. With the comfort milk tho I found you couldn't really batch make as the protein enzymes are partially digested so it would split and you have to make bottle quite soon after kettle boiled or it didn't dissolve properly. Also we upped to size 2 teats as mixture thicker x
