Nipple pain

Dd is 9 months and been bf pain free for 8 months but now one of my nipples is agony nothing to see but a lot of pain slightly off centre when feeding.

Can you describe the pain Justme?

Is it during feeds or after feeds?

Ah this morning I've found a cut in my nipple/areole. Maybe that's what it's been? It's like sharp but not stabbing pain.

Oh no there both sore now, guess its thrush or something. Any tips for getting rid of it without the doctors?

I don't know if you can get anything over the counter for it, but it may be worth seeing the GP to get it properly diagnosed. As the fact sheet states, thrush will occur in both breast, the pain will be agonising and will last after feeds.

Yep it's now in both sides since yesterday and is properly toe curling and takes about 30mins to fade after feeding I'm working till Saturday

Have another look at the BFN website, they've got another leaflet about thrush treatments. Don't forget to boil everything such as dummies and bras etc. to get rid of it. Some people report good results with Grapefruit Seed Extract.

Argh I just can't decide what it is!! DDs mouth is fine and pain in second side has gone again but first side still agony!!

Hey, me and dd been through and still going through the thrush thing. I feel like I have looked up so much about thrush now that i could be a thrush expert! Sounds like it could be thrush. Baby might not show signs of thrush in mouth even though you have it in or on your nipples. You can also have it just on one breast. The best thing is grapefruit seed extract from a health food store. dilute a solution about 10-12 drops per 1 oz cooled boiled water (stronger if its bad) and swab your nipples after every feed and put some via a cotton bud in your baby mouth. also wash your boobs in vinegar solution and rinse after every feed, change pads as often as possible and air your boobs as much as you can. wash everything at 60 and wear bras only one day. cut out all alcohol bread and refined sugar from your diet until your clear.take probiotics every day. i even opened a capsule and let my baby suck on a bit of the probiotics (check they are lactose free as most contain dry milk). the pain will be toe curling and you may have red nipples. sometimes you can get it in your milk ducts so you might need at least 2 week course of fluconazole from the gp. you need to keep the treatments up for 2 weeks after symptoms go as you can pass it back and forth between you. deep sympathy for the pain, i really know how it feels and also it is a complete arse doing all the rinsing and washing and swwabbing. Dont be caught out that you cant see white patches in baby mouth coz you can still have thrush.

also one thing you can do straight away to help is put a paste of baking soda and water on your boobs.
