pain while breast feeding

My daughter is 7 days old, and so far I have breast fed her. I stayed in our midwife-led unit until she would feed from me - she's very happy to feed from a bottle with a breast teat. Feeding her is still very painful. She won't latch on at all without nipple shields. It hurts in my breast while she is feeding. It really hurts. Hand-expressing and the breast pump does not hurt. She seems to go a long time between feeds - every 4 hours, which seems a long time.

I really would like to BF her, but it really hurts. I've got cushions and a triangular cushion which really helps with positioning her, but although it helps getting her into position, something still isn't right.

Please phone one of the national breastfeeding helplines numbers here and get to a breastfeeding support group as soon as you can.

Yep, call one of those numbers now. You need someone to look at what is going on and give you professional support. It shouldn't hurt.

Has she been checked for tongue tie?
