Just thought people might be interested if you don't already know.

Channel 4 on Weds 1 Feb. A programme called Extraordinary Breastfeeding is on. The write up in the magazine I'm looking at says:

"You'll be texting your friends about this as soon as it starts. It's about the phenomenon of mothers who breastfeed their kiddies well beyond the age considered 'normal' in this country. Seeing a feisty mum breastfeed her two-year-old twin isn't that disturbing, but the sequence of another lady suckling her 7 year old dughter isn't one we will forget in a hurry. "

I'm looking forward to seeing the tone it takes.

I know a woman who's still feeding a seven year old dd. It's worth remembering it's not so odd in other parts of the world and the average age a child stops being breastfed internationally is seven.

Right then Channel 4. Sock it to us. (Rubs hands and gets ready for battle.)

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 23/01/2006 20:14

where are these countries where breastfeeding over 2yrs, or weaning at 4yrs is so common??

I'm genuinely intrigued.

JoolsToo · 23/01/2006 20:26

breasts = sex is not the issue at all for me

as far as I'm concerned breast feeding is for nourishing babies until they are weaned and able to take solids and drink liquids from a cup, this is normal in our development as human beings.
You wouldn't carry a 7 year old around in a papoose - apart from the fact they'd be too darned heavy - a 7 year old is quite capable of walking by itself even though they might think it's wonderful to be close to mum.

breastfeeding an older child is a source of great comfort to that child and really no different from having a cuddle

My gran was an 'indigenous person', a Mayan Indian. She bf'd all her children. Until they were 2, and then she cut them off - and promptly fell pregnant.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 23/01/2006 20:45

cod - that's what I'm trying to assertain - where they DO feed them for years on end.

No-one I ever met out there from any country breastfed for very long periods of time, and many weaned earlier than we do. My SIL (now living over here) gave her DD1 a chicken leg bone to 'knaw' on when she was 3 months old to help her teething !

moondog · 23/01/2006 21:18

Emkana,I think your theory that people would pay good money for breastmilk is intriguing.
I reckon you're spot on.

QoQ.in PNG (where I was brought up )people b/fed for years and years.

shrub · 23/01/2006 21:37

breastmilk kills cancer cells and move to commercialise breastmilk articles might be of interest

JoolsToo · 23/01/2006 21:45

I can just see it

rows of nursing mothers hooked up to milking machines

nanneh · 23/01/2006 21:49

Actually I know several people in several different countries who have bf well beyond 3 years...one of them is my DH's cousin who bf her 3 sons well over 3 years until they self-weaned...and I am not talking Africa.

There is a well-known study comparing primates to humans (I will have to dig it out) that concludes that the "natural" age for a human child to wean off the breast is 7 years.

Of course not many people do it up to 7 years. But that's due to society's prejudices not because it ain't natural. In fact it seems very natural to me

nanneh · 23/01/2006 21:55

have a look atthis

re. study on "natural" weaning age

moondog · 23/01/2006 22:00

That cancer one is fascinating shrub.

MrsSpoon · 23/01/2006 22:08

I don't have any problem with a seven year old still being fed (would assume it is probably a small feed in the evening/morning, rather than demand feeding), personally don't think I would have carried on b/feeding until this age. I do however think the 10 year old having a feed for a birthday treat a bit odd. Will watch with interest.

pupuce · 23/01/2006 22:09

Do you know that breastmilk is ACTUALLY sold between hospitals... and go and guess at what price ! Come on have a guess................
And some adults also get given breastmilk in hospital... I believe usually by nasal tube and for some specific ilnness/situation (like Coeliac?)... as it is the ONLY thing they can digest!

moondog · 23/01/2006 22:11

£50 a litre???

JoolsToo · 23/01/2006 22:11

is that when the Complan has run out?

pupuce · 23/01/2006 22:12

What's complan?
Higher Moondog!

emkana · 23/01/2006 22:20

see what .95 will buy you

how much more could you sell the human equivalent for, which was actually designed for humans?

So how much then, pupuce??????
