10 month old - cows milk or aptimil toddler milk?

Hi I am returning to work soon and want to stop BF. However my DD refuses formula milk and will only drink cows milk or aptimil +1 toddler milk. She eats a wide range of foods but is quite "sicky" with what seems to be an easily upset tummy. Any views on the best way forward?

My DS, a bit older at 14 months, is on half cows half toddler (but I have a thread on here asking whether it might be disturbing his sleep...)

Not much help I know, but just mentioning that mixing is possible.

Good luck.x

DS2 had cows milk when he was at nursery from 10.5 months, although I was still BF when we were home. It was fine and I am planning to do the same with DS3 at the same age. It would be cows milk 3 times a day during nursery days and then breastmilk in the mornings/evenings and non-nursery days.

Are you planning on stopping BF altogether, or just while she is at nursery ie not expressing at work for her? I think it is recommended that you don't give cows milk as the only milk until they are 12 months, so if you don't want to BF at all then maybe you should think about formula for at least some of the time, if not all. What does your HV say?

I thought you weren't supposed to give cows milk till a year old due to allergens

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/02/2012 00:59

Not allergens, it is to do with vitamins.

I BF but will give cows milk from 10.5-11 months for a daytime drink. Easier than faffing with making formula at the right temp etc.

Why wouldn't you just use pumped BM I bf and when I give my daughter pumped milk i just give it to her cold and she likes it I think moreso because she's teething but Iv never fiddled with making right temp the way I see it is she will be on cold milk eventually so why bother warming it if she takes it

VisiballyUnderTheRoad · 06/02/2012 01:18

why won't you pump bm
12 months for cows milk

and 2 years at least to have bm..........

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/02/2012 01:22

12 months for cows milk to be the only milk. Obviously it is fine before then otherwise babies couldn't have cheese, yoghurt etc.

Pumping is a PITA, time consuming and not all women can get much despite having good supply.

Thanks all for taking the time to reply - would like to continue BF but the nature of my work means I won't always be home in time for last feed before bed so my husband will have to give her a bottle. I have tried expressing but takes ages to get even a couple of ounces.. Not sure of the diff between 6 month plus formula and year plus formula. May try to mix cows with 6 month plus formula and gradually get her used to the taste...

DC1 was on cows milk from 10 months. He refused formula and a bottle and was initially having a BF morning and eve from starting nursery at 8 months. He stopped at 10 months, which in hindsight was a nursing strike, but I didn't realise it at the time. I couldn't get him to have formula, so gave him cows milk rather than water.
