Painful kneading when breastfeeding

My BF 15 week old DS has developed a painful way of kneading my boob when he's feeding. He pushes me with his hand and pulls his head back slightly. This leads to the latch gradually slipping and hurting. The kneading also make my boob sore as he's stretching my skin Sad.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so what did you do to rectify it?

Thanks in advance!

Yes! My DS started doing this too at about the same age. I just kept re-latching him frequently. Holding his hand, or rather letting him grip my finger instead of my breast, seemed to help too. He seems to have more-or-less stopped now at 21 weeks.

oh god, i've got all this to come, have I?
:(
DD (7w5d) sticks her fingernails into my boobs.

Yes, you have! We have the fingernails thing going on here too still (although he didn't start it until a week or so ago - your DD is obviously precocious!! Grin)

I know someone who used a distractor: necklace with a loop for baby tp grab.

They learn to do this, it can actully help them change the flow of milk. Like if your doing breast compresions.

It's funny as I didn't really think about it with DD but after having DS I have some friends with older one's who are still feeding. He has actually comepressed his mum's breast while she was feeding her baby and said it's to help get the milk out mummy. Quit cute.

interesting.
and makes perfect sense - they know the flow is slow, and they know how to make it faster.

It also explains why DD is digging the fingernails in now - it's like she's learning how to kneed the breast when she gets better control of her hands.

Hi, thanks all your replies. I was thinking he was doing it because the flow was too quick, because of him pulling his head back, but maybe he is trying to get more milk... I just wish it didn't hurt so much!
Mig That's cute that he said to get more milk. Smile
Nickle hopefully your DD will be a bit more gentle with you than my DS is with me!

Jaques glad to your your DS has grown out of it, hopefully mine will too.

Sympathies, my dc3 was a mauler. I used to hold her hand, or place her hand on my bare tummy instead, and sometimes she kneaded that (slightly less painful!). I tried the necklace thing, but didn't work for me, but I know it can sometimes help.
