Thrush??

My DD is 4 weeks old and has what is possibly a fungal rash mostly on her face, neck and chest. GP prescribed canesten with hydrocortisone cream to put on it which has helped somewhat and it seems to be clearing up slightly.

However i'm concerned that if this is a fungal - or thrush - rash will it be on my breasts and in her mouth too? I've had sore cracked nippes for some time and they dont seem to be healing well, i have had a bit of painful time of breastfeeding but although the pain in the left breast has improved a lot, the right is still quite painful on starting feeding. My nipples also feel like there stinging sometimes. DD doesn't have white spots in her mouth or snything but sometimes has a white coating on her tongue but GP said that's likely to just be milk from the last feed - yet he said the rash could be caused by BFing, i'm confused!!

I was on antibiotics after EMCS and am quite prone to thrush anyway so I'm wondering if i should go back to the GP or not... Has anyone here experienced anything similar? I've googled it but cant really find much info on thrush face rashes!! Any advice is much appreciated :)

The breastfeeding network have recently produced a list ofFAQs about thrush, and this is their leaflet about diagnosis and treatment.

I hope this helps.

Have you been to a breastfeeding support group or seen a bf counsellor? They may be able to help as it could well be a problem with positioning or attachment that is causing the pain and nipple damage.

I keep meaning to go to the local BF support group but DD's sleeping patterns have been rather erratic and have been grabbing sleep when she sleeps so i've not had chance to go yet, hopefully i can make it next week though!

Those leaflets are really helpful and reassuring, thank you! I think I was getting a bit paranoid... maybe it's just taking my LO and myself a while to get the hang of this breastfeeding lark! :)

I know what you mean, I didn't get to a bf group until DS was nearly 4 weeks old even though I really needed help. Getting out of the house does get a lot easier as time goes by :)

I had a cracked nipple for 6 weeks that wasnt healing and no other symptoms of thrush but HV suggested it was thrush stopping the nipple healing as I have a history of thrush so started treament which conicided with me and baby getting symptoms. 2 weeks on still trying to get rid of it. it can only effect one breast. I havent heard of thrush rashes on the face. If you think about what yeast likes, sugar, warmth and moist doesnt seem to fit that it would be on face but Im no doc! Be more likely to be in creases or folds of skin I would think.
