If anyone had told me a week ago...

...that today I'd be sitting squeezing my own boobs whilst DH diligently collected the resulting colostrum in a syringe to be shot into 4 day old baby girl's mouth and that this would seem perfectly normal to us both...well, I wouldn't have believed them, to say the least.

And yet here we are. DD fed reasonably well in hospital, partly I suspect due to the attentions of very forceful midwives who pushed her head onto my breast and wouldn't take "waaaa" for an answer. But since we've been home she either fights frantically against being on the breast - literally pushing herself off and screaming - or consents to latch on, sucks a couple of times and then promptly falls into a deep sleep.

We had a wonderful session with a lactation consultant yesterday, following which we had 2 or 3 really good feeds, but today she's back to her previous pattern. Consultant has recommended just keeping her close, offering the breast whenever she looks vaguely interested, and the aforementioned colostrum harvesting to keep her going till my milk comes in - which I hope will be very soon!

Anyone else had this? What worked for you?

That's great, well done your dd

crikeybadger · 27/01/2012 08:00

Just popped in to see how you're getting on Jenny- so glad to read your previous post. Fantastic that you're milk has come in and that she's fed well and so good to see that you are feeling happier.

It's all ups and downs in these first few days, but just keep going- you're doing brilliantly. Smile

Hope you have a good day of cuddling and feeding and not doing much else. Smile

Just welled up reading your last post yay, well some all of you!! It gets better, just stick with it.

buttonmoon78 · 27/01/2012 10:59

Oh I'm so pleased! I started reading this and was going to post in a 'please don't beat yourself up, sometimes its hard, sometimes it gets better etc' kind of way and I read to the end to find out your clever baby has done it! So I cried! (in my defence I've had lots of bf issues!)

Well done - keep going. She obviously knows what is good for her. Snuggle up and keep the rest of the world at bay - responsibilities can wait, this is the biggest one for now. Smile

Cool news. Enjoy your babymoon x

I was following thread and couldn't not post after your last update as it made me cry ? tears if happiness though (ditto the dam hormones ?)

I love that babies know what they want, how to get what they want and then just feed exactly how you want them to!

Fabulous, just fab. You are amazing for persevering (many would have given up), your brilliant DH for sticking by you and well done to your DD for doing what she needed to do.

Enjoy the next few days, dont be scared to turn visitors away whilst you get bf'ing established (my DP did this for me as I was too nice and felt guilty but I look back and was glad he did at the time, it was just us 3 for a few days)

Congrats too on you newborn ?

Zanzicat · 28/01/2012 10:59

Like the other posters, your last posts were so lovely they made me cry. Am 32 weeks with first child and very hormonal! Congratulations to you, your lovely DH and clever, new daughter.

oh wonderful :)

Jennyrosity · 29/01/2012 00:36

Thank you everyone. We've continued to have our ups and downs in the last 2 days - getting breast feeding established seems to involve 3 steps back for every step forward - but we have made real progress today, and my darling DD is currently curled up asleep on the boobs she's just drained Smile
