Hi I am ebf DS he is 3 weeks old, I am expessing 2 bottles a day so DP can feed give me a break and its working well, DS takes bottle, I'm finding pumping very easy etc. Past day iv noticed a pain in my breast during and continuing after feed. Its not so much my nipple but more of a dull ache inside my boob if that makes sense? How would I know if its thrush? Nipples look ok so does DS mouth although he does have little hard white spots in his gums. MW thought they were early teeth doctor said they were harmless cysts (very common apparently!) Should I see someone and if so who? I never see the same GP and its often a locum due to some kind of nhs/doctors at war issue at my surgery. People talk about BF cafes but iv never heard of them and does every town have them and is it an actual cafe with tea and coffee served?! Who are they run by?

Hi Glamourmama, congratulations on your new baby!! Sounds like it might be thrush. If you search on here there are some excellent posts. Someone has linked to brilliant leaflet all about thrush with symptoms/ treatment which would be v helpful to take to docs as treatment slightly different.
Not making much sense cos brain dead with tiredness but HTH x

Thanks poppycat, woke up with severe pain in breast so will def go doctors if I can get an appt! Couldn't find thrush leaflet on here so will google it. Just expressed from the painful boob as couldn't bear feeding at that side the pain was really bad but think that's cos my boob was full. Is it still ok to carry on feeding and will my poor baby suffer feel any pain if he gets thrush from me? Or will he automatically have it too?

On this page you will see two info sheets about thrush and another good one about diagnosing nipple pain.

The Q and A about thrush is recent and has been drawn up in response to lots and lots of women being wrongly diagnosed for thrush. It's rare before 6 weeks and pain is in both breasts after every feed. I'm not saying you haven't got it, but have a read through first.

Not everywhere has a breastfeeding cafe (I think they are a brand name), but you should be able to access a breastfeeding support group near you.

You can look for a group on the ABM website here

Just checking in and wondering how you are. Could it be mastitis??

glamourmama · 20/01/2012 10:25

Hi thanks both of you! Jus returned from doctors where a lovely nurse practitioner diagnosed mastitis. So glad I made appt and didn't wait for it to go on its own. Got some antibiotics so hope it clears up. I wonder if its been caused by not fully emptying breasts during a feed? Once again thanks for advice, this website is fab xx

Hi glad you've got it sorted. Have a look at kellymom.com - there is lots of info on there about mastitis. Just remember that the anitobiotics may now leave you at risk of thrush, so it may be worth getting some probiotics in just in case.
