I'm looking for advice from long term breastfeeders. How did you wean your babies at this stage. I would like to wean in order to conceive. How can I make this easier on my baby. should I remove myself from the evening feed and ask my husband to put my toddler to bed? any suggestions for me?

Hi Janey,

15 months is a great run :) Is there just that one reason that you want to wean? It is possible to conceive while BF for many women if that is something you would consider. Some children self-wean when their mothers become pregnant. There's some info here if you'd like to read a bit more about it.

If you feel like you're ready to wean there there are some tips here.

Good luck, hope you find something that works for you :)

Hi EauRouge, Yes to try and conceive is the only reason I would stop bf. I really don't want to stop and neither does my 15 month old. I feel I want to give myself and hopefully an unborn the best possible start and I am concerned about bf and being pregnant. I would love if my LO self-weaned but I feel that he is alittle too young for that yet. I have just got my period back and I want get into the best possible health and fittness. I am feeding morning and night at the moment.

Hi Janey, what are your concerns about BF and pregnancy? If you don't want to stop BF then it is safe to do so in a normal pregnancy, there is no evidence that it causes miscarriage or any health problems for the unborn foetus. I don't want to persuade you either way, just reassure you that you don't have to stop if you don't want to. If you do want to stop then that's fine, you've done a great job breastfeeding for 15 months.

I have bf through two pg and tandem nursed through to month 8 of my last oneGrin.

If you have got your periods back and don't have a short luteal phase you have as much chance of getting pg as anyone (assuming no existing fertility problems).

If you want to wean, that's fine but you don't need to wean to get pg (generally), you can bf during pg. Kellymom.com has a huge section on bf/pg.

Good luck with the TTC.

Thank you EauRouge adn TruthSweet. I really don't feel ready to wean and my little one is not either. Maybe I shoul just see if I can coneive anyway. I had 1 AF to date and I have really reduced feeding during the day so who knows.
