Chewed nipples!

My DS (9 months) has recently got his first two teeth and when I BF him it hurts! He's not biting (he's done that a couple of times and I definitely knew about it) but I sometimes check to see if I'm bleeding afterwards as its that sore. There was even a little bit of skin hanging off this morning which made my eyes water when it stuck to my bra...

Has anyone else experienced this? What options do I have other than putting up with the pain or giving up?

Thanks!

Sometimes when teeth come through they need to change their latch a bit to compensate, and they may need help with this.

Are you able to work on trying to really concentrate on a good, deep latch each time? If you need help with this is there a group or local breastfeeding counsellor who can come and give you tips in person?

You absolutely don't need to just put up with it. Teeth shouldn't cause this problem - or at least this type of problem is quite resolvable but it may just take a week or so of really encouraging a good, open mouth, deep latch and getting him to hold that good latch and starting again if he slips down the breast.

Kind of a back to basics things if that makes sense?

Hi

I agree with organic. I'm in same boat - my dd just got her first tooth a couple of weeks ago. When she bites I push my boob closer so she realises somethings not right and readjusts latch. My friend used to squeeze her baby's hand and some people say no and make a fuss when it hurts.

I think they need to learn to latch on differently and I think sometimes it can't be easy for them with sore gums.

Good luck x
