10mo DD beginning to self wean?

HAve been EBF DD and we are now down to 3 feeds a day-First thing, mid afternoon and at bedtime. The last 3 nights, DD has taken only 1 side and last night after about 5 sucks hasthen been laid down to sleep as she doesn't want anymore and unlatches herself. A little bit of moaning but has then gone to sleep. She still drinks well, draining one breast first thing and then has small feed in tha afternoon. Is this ok? Am concerned if she is having enough milk, do give cheese and yogurts as well. She has got a rotten cold atm and is also teething I think. TBH I think I'm not ready for her to give upSad, but if she does then she does i suppose. Should i try introducing cow's milk for a drink as well? Any answers

I don't have any experience of this myself, but my gut reaction is to just see how she goes for the next few days. If she has a rotten cold then she may well not want to feed, whatever it is.

Don't introduce anything else yet - if you're giving other calcium rich foods, a few days won't make any difference.

Especially if you're not ready to stop, don't introduce anything else to the mix - it may well be when she feels better she'll go back to whatever her 'normal' is.

Good luck, and I hope someone better qualified than me answers you soon!

Self weaning usually occurs between 2 1/2 to 7 years. Under 2 years is almost unheard of and is either considered a nursing strike or that the child has swapped bfing for some other source of comfort/nutrition. It's fine to wean under 2y of course (or over Wink)!

It doesn't sound like a full blown nursing strike as she is still bfing though not as much as she used to. With a little encouragement she may well pick up more nursing sessions. Using teething powders/gels or calpol/baby ibuprofen it she is really in pain a bit before bfing can help too.

Thanks for replies. Just to update you DD is now back to her 2 boob bedtime feed again and seems to have recovered from her cold as no second tooth has appeared. Boobs are now much happier!
