Hi

I've just started a feeding diary again to keep track of how many feeds ahead of going back to work in 4 weeks. I'm planning to give one bottle of formula in the mornings (so that the nursery can do that) and bf rest of time. I was quite suprised yesterday to count 11 feeds in 24 hours!!! I know my DS does cluster feed in evening but 11 at this age!

I think he might have a bit of a cold so it might be a bit more than usual as he isn't feeding for a long time for each feed, but even so thought this seemed a bit unusual.

He's perfectly happy and a whopping cuddly baby so I'm not worried as such, just wondering how common this is? I know when he's ready for solids it will drop a bit but he's not ready yet. The HV hasn't recommended baby rice or anything and I thought the idea that bf babies don't get enough milk is a myth, but 11 feeds in 24 hours does seem an awful lot! I read it should be more like 5?

Hi, my 5 month old has around 6 feeds a day, sometimes 5, sometimes 7. He only really has more than that if he is going through a growth spurt. But he is a real guzzler and feeds fast and furiously! So i think he takes in a lot in each feed. From reading threads on this forum i think 11 would still be quite normal, but certainly within my nct group (all still bf) they feed between 5-8 times per day for their 5/6 month olds.

Where did you read that? 11 sounds pretty normal, 5 doesn't sound like very many- breastmilk is digested quite quickly. It's lovely that you're feeding on demand :) How many hours will you be working when you go back?

I think we do about 9 on an average day (24 hour period), normally 4/5 during the day and 4 from 7pm to 7am but sometimes it's more if teething. LO is 5 months on Friday (6th) and has increased deeds these last few weeks and I'm told this is normal by our breastfeeding specialists at baby group (due to stomach size, milk digested quicker, teething increases feed/comfort). X

EauRouge well I was going to be doing 2 mornings a week (Pt lecturer) but was just told that I've only got one class now. I'm a bit relieved if i'm honest but financially it's a bit of a hit. Makes the feeding much easier though. I'm not sure where I read the 5-6 feeds a day now you ask me! I don't know if it was a leaflet or online somewhere.

Thanks LB that's good to know. I am wondering if DS is starting to teeth a bit. He has had a very red cheek but no other signs I'm aware of mind you.

Thanks all.
