EBF 3 month old cough/cold

Hiya
My lovely DS is just getting over his first cough and cold, he is mostly better, ie not really congested anymore, just a bit snuffly and a bit of a cough. He has been ill for about a week, and for a few days was really feeding a lot less than normal (I even took him to the docs because I was worried about dehydration) Now that he can breathe more easily he is feeding more again, although I would say it is still less than normal.

However, he often starts to cough soon after latching on, and over the last couple of days he has started getting hysterical over this, pulls away screaming and won't start or continue to feed even when he has stopped coughing. I am finding it quite upsetting (as I am sure, is he!) The other problem is latch - he was really struggling to feed and I was so worried about him feeding that I just let him do whatever, so really he is just latched on to my nipples at the moment as he will not open his mouth wide at all - I thought this would get better again once he could breathe more but it hasn't. To be honest his latch has never been great anyway, but it is beginning to hurt a bit now which it wasn't before.

Also, I feel like I have less milk than before and am worried that his reduced feeding has had an effect on my supply. Previously I was one of those people who had milk spraying everywhere and spilling out of ds mouth, but that isn't really happening now. I have read that things often settle down at around 3 months anyway, but it seems a strange coincidence with the timing!

I don't know what my question is really, I think I am just feeling concerned that bf is going a bit rubbish at the moment, and ds is not getting what he needs (nappywise there are still plenty of wet and dirty ones but I do think there are slightly less wet ones than normal)

Thanks anyone..... Smile

Someone with more knowledge will probably be along soon but my first thoughts are:

Is it possible his latch is affecting the delivery of the milk and frustrating him?

Only other thing I was going to suggest was a bit of reflux but I suspect you may have seen signs of this before 3 months old.

Do you have a lactation consultant? They are fab at ensuring good latch which assists with no end of problems.... and everything else to do with BF. If not try the Breastfeeding network - they are also great.

I had really bad nipple thrush and with bad latch it was soooooo painful and also I don't think it will help the infection either from what my consultant told me. I couldn't believe the difference from the smallest adjustment into how my DD latched on.

Good luck :)
