Thumb sucking

ds3 is 13 weeks and ebf. He is dropping down the centiles, which I know is not necessarily too bad, but just wanted to get some advice from those of you with more knowledge about these things.

Ds1 and ds2 were both ebf and gained weight really quickly (although are pretty small now but then so am I). Neither sucked their thumb or dummy or anything.

Ds3 sucks his thmb and has done for a few weeks now. He sleeps from about 11pm to 7am which the other two didnt do till much later either. Just wondered if the thumb sucking stops him asking for milk as much as the other two did, which I guess could affect my supply?

Wondered if anyone had any advice? TIA.

I think he is just different. DD1 gained quite fast, she fed every 2 hours day and night and stayed on the 75th centile. However DD2 goes 6 to 7 hours at night she was born on 91st centile and now on 50th at 17 weeks. She is happy healthy and contented. I've stopped worrying and thinking its just her.
As for the thumb sucking, she does it sometimes though not often, and I would say its better than using me for comfort like DD1 used to.

What has you HV said?

Hello :) How often does he feed during the day? 11-7 is a long stretch for such a young baby, is he sleeping next to you? Does he awake at all in the night?

whyme2 · 21/12/2011 16:23

I would say not to worry to much. My ds is a thumb sucker and has been since birth.
He did sleep well at night and put on enough weight to keep the hv happy but certainly not as fast as his older sisters. He has always had the look of a skinned rabbit tbh.

He is 5 now and still sucks his thumb though . . .

During the day its just really when he cries for it which is sometimes twice in an hour but more usually every three to four hours. He usually has that length of nap at least in the morning.

Eviepoo - I had been thinking it was just him, but had him weighed today for the first time for ages, and think he may actually have dropped a bit of weight as I stuck him on my own scales last week. He has a sticky eye (which he's had since birth) and got drops today incase its infected at all, so it may hav something to do with it.

He sleeps in an amby nest in our room but come into be if he ever does wake up (some nights he wakes about 4am).

I wouldnt usually worry but he has seemed pretty grumpy for the last few days/week, so its just making me a little concerned.

Mean to say about the hv - she said to bring him back in about two weeks just to keep an eye on it. Would just be nice if he seemed satisfied after a feed too and then I wouldnt be worried about him.

Ds found his thumb at about 12 or 13 weeks and it corresponded with him sleeping 10 - 6. He was ebf.
Dd sucks her fingers but found them a lot later and only started sleeping through once she was 11months or so and also ebf.

There doesn't seem to be a pattern.

Not sure if this helps Xmas Grin

You could try offering more so that he gets more milk and see if that helps with the weight gain. Is there a local BF group that you can go to?
