Fighting bottle.

Ds is now nearly 5 months old and we have started weaning him. Usual 'routine' is wake (6.20), bottle (7/8am), baby rice (8.30), nap (30 mins), bottle(10/11am), nap (1hr) bottle (2pm), good sleep (1.5 hrs), small bottle (5pm), veg mush (6pm), bath (6.30), small bottle (6.45pm), bed at 7pm. Timings and nap times are all approximate. Obvs!! The problem that I am having is ds appears to have gone off milk....he really fights the bottle. But only in the daytime. Especially 7am and 10am feeds?! He does this even if he has no milk in the night and no baby rice in the morning.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced this? He cries and wriggles each time. Gets really quite upset sometimes. I don't force him...buy I'm worried he's not getting enough milk. I offer him 7 oz every feed but only 5 oz on the evening feeds. He rarely finishes daytime feeds.....and can take up to an hour, in broken segments and even then he leaves a couple of ounces at least. I'm wondering if he is ready to drop a feed? Today he has only had 4 bottles. And only finished one (bedtime feed). Any suggestions?! Should mention he is 17lb and on the 91st centile. So not worried about his weight just that he may not be getting enough of what he needs at this young age. TIA.

beckie have you tried a faster teat? Could you stop giving the solid food for a couple of days and see if he takes enough formula then?

Hi jilted. Tried dropping the solids. Still no improvement. Now he is back having his baby rice (made with formula) as at least then I know he's getting some milk in the morning. Still taking his evening feed fully but the others not so much!! Tried faster/slower teet. Tried warm/cold/room temp milk. Tried sitting in dark room. Tried sitting up/lying down. Running out of ideas. Sad Any other tips/ideas??

Has he been ill at all recently? Perhaps he has a sore throat or ear infection that is making feeding difficult?

Have you tried swapping the formula he has, either switching brands or from powder to ready to feed (or other way round)? I'd still keep it as an infant (from birth) one though.

He has a bit of cough and cold at the moment. Do you think that's what it could be?

Hi, my dd who is 25 weeks today is a bit the same she'd started to leave 2-3 oz at each feed (7oz bottles), she's been having a few tastes of veg and fruit but nothing serious yet. This week she's refused milk when waking up over night, however she's pretty much finishing the 4 bottles over the day. She feeds 8 ish, 12ish (then veg or fruit), 4.30ish then final bottle at 7.30 before bed. She wakes about 5 times a night but won't feed and needs either a rock back to sleep or dummy back in. Then comes in with us about 4ish til wake up at 7!

It could well be. Have you got an open cup or free flow beaker to hand? They might be easier for him to drink from (no sucking) so he might pick up his intake.

How are his nappies? Still plenty of wet ones?

beckieperk · 16/12/2011 18:48

Well sort of....up until just recently we had to change his nappy in the night, but not anymore. It's wet in the morning but not sopping like it used to be. Other than that pretty similar to normal.....I'll keep a closer look because I'm not too sure if it's less than before?! I've just come down with his 'bug' too so I'm a bit confused!!! Ha.
