Problems with bf 10mo

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me with a small problem I'm having. I am still bf my 10mo DS. I have very inverted nipples so it wasn't the easiest start and took me ages to get established due to pain and cracks etc, but we persevered and have now reached 10 months.

A couple of weeks ago DS was poorly and waking at night. I brought him in to the bed and fed him. Obviously it was the lazy option but I was very tired (only getting an hour or two at night for a couple of weeks) and I guess the latch wasn't great or his teeth might have got in the way and I got a crack.

A week down the line and the crack is like a crevass. I am sore. I've been wearing a nipple shell to keep the nipple out and in the air and using loads of Lansinoh but each feed any scab that forms is taken off. The initial latch is very painful and I dread it now. I have just cut him down to two bfeeds a day and a cup of formula at lunch. This morning I could only feed from the good side and I'm going to try and dig out my old avent pump and express from the bad. I'm starting to consider giving up but I had hoped to feed to one year.

Any ideas as to what else I can do? I'm feeling a bit miserable about this at the moment...

Thank you!

Poor you, that sounds really painful. Have you tried any of these ideas?

I had a few small cuts around this age (think it was front teeth coming in plus cold and he was nipping me in his sleep at the end of feeds) and I did hand expressing for a day or so - rubbing bm onto the cut allowed it to heal enough so I could carry on.

Not fun though and that was not a crevass Sad.

You can still feed only from one side I think, if you really can't carry on with the other.

And co-sleeping is not the lazy option, its the smart option to ensure you get some sleep to be able to look after your child the next day.

Thank you for your replies. Today I tried to express with the pump and a load of green pus came out from the crack. I rang the dr and couldn't get an appointment but they said he would call.

He did call but I'd had to go out. I expressed again this evening, with more pus, but managed to get through the pain.

I will try your ideas, thank you, but I guess I also need a dose of antibiotics.

Thanks again! Smile

Oh you poor thing! I think you need to get it seen asap, it may need draining.

Agree with albrecht on getting to a doctor as soon as you can, even if you have to really insist on getting an appointment.

Also agree that bringing Lo into your bed was by far the most sensible option, so don't apologise for that Smile.

Really hope you get some antibiotics and start feelng better soon.
