11 Weeks - Not taking enough?!

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 08/01/2006 22:23

Today Rebecca has had :

6oz at 7am

5oz at 12 noon

5oz at 5pm

She has not wanted anything in between, and is now down for the night (has been sleeping through for 2 weeks)

Yesterday she took the same as above and an extra bottle of 5oz.

I really dont think she is getting enough - how can i get her to take more?!

She has been really poorly these past few days with hacking cough/chest infection/eye infection so is this why she isnt taking the milk?

being poorly could be the problem. but tbh when i started bottle feeding Linus he was about 4 months and he would only take 4oz at a feed! he has NEVER taken more than 7oz MAX

she will drink what she wants... if she's hungry she'll have more. trust her!
if you are worried though you could try giving her a dreamfeed tonihgt?

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 08/01/2006 22:26

i did wonder about the dreamfeed but was worried that might start making her wake in the night again?! I love the fact she is sleeping through, because Jess never did!

God, you would have thought i would be ok with all of this second time round, but im CRAP!

Sounds like a good reason. As long as you keep offering it to her I'm sure she will take it when she's ready - baby's listen to their bodies much better than we do. Just be prepared for 'gannet baby' when she's a bit better!

starlover · 08/01/2006 22:31

you could actually try not even taking her out of the cot... just put the bottle to her mouth. she will probably just take it without even waking up!

mummygow · 08/01/2006 22:35

jrm what weight is rebecca - it 2.5 times there weight = the total daily intake and the hospital told me that they were quite happy if he was taking 75% of his daily requirments

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 08/01/2006 22:42

She was 11lbs 8oz on Thursday..... so what does that work out at?!

27.7 - so you really want her to have about another 4 oz but then if she's not feeling hungary and she has had 16oz she wont be dehydrated and her wee appetite might come back in the next couple of days

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 08/01/2006 22:47

Thanks for that MG - you are a star.... will try harder tomorrow - she is perking up a bit compared to the past few days so touch wood tomorrow will be better!

another thing when jess was small i remember she was ill and the gp told me as long as she was taking fluids not to really worry and he gave me sachets call dioralite to put in water to keep hydrated so maybe just watch her eating for another day or 2 - oh its so hard - call your doctor or hv tomorrow

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 08/01/2006 22:49

she is still wee-ing and poo-ing fine, so not too concerned health wise - was thinking more development wise!

At least now i know what she SHOULD be having - im going to up her to 6oz bottles tomorrow to see if she will take that extra ounce per feed.

Thanks again for all your help... if no better tomorrow will get her to docs late afternoon.

Diarolyte is only necessary if they are vomiting badly or have diarrhoea.

Just stick to milk for now. The cold is bound to be affecting Rebecca's feeding How old is she btw?

If the cough is particularly bad go to your gp

mummygow · 08/01/2006 23:05

sorry mercy I wasnt saying she should use diaoralyt I was just making the point about still having fluids iyswim.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 08/01/2006 23:10

went to GP on friday, she has got antibiotics and nasal drops

she is 11 weeks on Tuesday.... if by tomorrow lunchtime she hasnt taken more than 12oz ill worry and get her to docs again!

Well she woke at 6.30am and took 4oz, so will try her on more once i get to toddlers.

REALLY hoping she takes more, because SURELY 16oz in one day is not enough - Jess drinks more than that at 17 months!

ds didn't take on much milk at that age and was not climbing up the centiles as the HV wanted. He also started sleeping through from 11 weeks and therefore missing out night feeds. He sure made up for it at about 4 or 5 mo - stopped sleeping through and took on a lot more milk - so on one hand don't worry - she'll catch up - but on the other - enjoy the peaceful nights as she may stop it in a couple of months and start wanting more milk!
