Don't bother with follow on milk. It often has more sugar in it than regular formula.

Only bonus is that it's sometimes on offer (first state milk not allowed to be marketed).

You might want to consider giving him/her extra iron drops if you don't move to follow-on milk, but otherwise there is no point and no nutritional benefit (and the iron is of dubious benefit if he/she takes to solids enthusiastically).

Follow on isn't necessary or recommended by the NHS - first milk til 12 months and then full fat cow's milk.

MigGril · 04/12/2011 19:41

Tmesis - first milk has all the iron in it a baby should need. It has to as was design for baby's upto 12motnhs. It's often why baby's who are changed to follow on milk have problems with constipation as it can have to much iron in it for baby's on a healty balanced meals.

Follow on milk is only avaible in country's where the ban on marketing first milk excist.

That's why I highlighted the might and said it was of dubious benefit -- should probably have been more specific, though.

hazeyjane · 04/12/2011 19:58

If there are specific problems with lack of iron, then follow on milk is an easy way to get extra iron into their diet.

Otherwise, I'd just stick to first milk.
