Thrush treatment

Has anyone ever used miconazole to treat both babies mouth and your nipple? Been to gp today but he was rather young so not sure this is right, especially as the box says for oral thrush Hmm. DD is 16 days old if that changes anything. Thanks!

I was given Miconazole to treat my little one but was given oral Fluconazole to treat me, however the Breast Feeding Network does suggest the topical use of Miconazole on the nipple as a thrush treatment. It took a while for mine to clear so you may need to try the topical treatment and then go back if it still persists. I've pasted the line to the Breast Feeding Network PDF below.

Meant pasted 'the link'!

Thanks TSC. He said not to take the pill because it can be secreted into the milk and not to use canesten because of DDs age. I have read that BFN leaflet before going so felt a bit like he didn't really know what he was talking about. What do I do?

If it was me I'd try what he has given you for 5-7 days to see if that clears it and then go back if not. Did he say how soon he thought it would take effect?I know that the Fluconzole can take a while as my GP gave me a 14 day and then month dose. I know that some GP's won't prescribe Fluconzole as it is not technically licensed for breast feeding Mother's but from what I have read and from what my GP said it is fine. Could you see another Doctor at the practice and take the breast feeding networks doc on Fluconzole and thrush treatment whilst breast feeding (PDF link below)?

I'm going to call and get a phone appt with a more experienced dr in the practice. I just don't want to waste the next 7 days and continue to be in pain!

Definitely better to go back if you think he hasn't prescribed properly. I can emphathise with the pain and hope you get it sorted soon! Congrats on your DD xx
