DD refusing expressed milk - and it smells "wrong"...?

Really trying hard to get DD to take some expressed milk - have tried sippy cup, small shot sized glass, bottles - nada. (I want/need a break as she feeds hourly during the day and 2 hourly at night - 5 months old)

Anyway, expressed some off this morning, which she wouldn't take, and started crying as soon as a drop hit her mouth. I decided to sniff it - it smelt "wrong", so I tasted it and it tasted "off" - it had only been expressed 10 mins before! What's going on?

Oh and she seems to have CMPI so can't just give her formula even if I wanted to...

its probably because u have a high lipase activity i n your milk. To aviod heat the milk directly after expressing- but not to boiling point then cool it quickly which will inactivate the lipase. However once it smells rancid (thou still safe, the milk can niot be treated)

My h/v gave me some print outs about this- i am not a genious Grin

Link to Kellymom's info about excess lipase in ebm here

Thanks for the link - it implies the lipase sours milk some time after expression though - not less than 10mins... maybe my miilk just smells funny! Confused

Did it smell waxy/soapy/cheesy or did it taste of something else (perhaps strongly of garlic or other pungent flavouring)?

LittleWaveyLines · 28/11/2011 15:46

Erm... maybe a bit sour and garlicky...?

I was just wondering if it was the lipase making it smell (in which case it is generally described as soapy/waxy) or if it was something you ate which made it smell/taste different (garlic is something which comes through quite easily in bm).

It might be that you do have the excess lipase thing but you had also eaten a tonne of garlic bread yesterday Grin that combined to make a really interesting smell.....

Hourly in the day seems a lot! Have you tried leaving her with someone just for half an hour who can distract her? So you can have a mini break at least. Does she have reflux - is she feeding due to discomfort?

LittleWaveyLines · 28/11/2011 16:15

DP can take her for a walk sometimes and she starts getting upset after 1 1/2 hours..... she is a snacker I think. Also not very passaroundable - wont even go to DP if she's tired in the evening....

Erm I'll have another sniff tomorrow when I will try again '(!) I do cook with garlic but don't think I'd had that much Grin
