1yr+ formula - advice needed

Hi all, my daughter has just turned 1. She was BF until 6 months and has been on formula ever since. I just bought a box of that Aptamil 1yr+ formula, thinking that during winter she could possibly do with the extra vitamins. However, since starting it she has been constipated. All the extra iron she can't digest maybe? Also, inexplicably, it is vanilla flavoured which I find to be quite gross.

So here's my question: am I a victim of marketing, and should I just give her full-fat organic cow's milk? She eats a good, balanced diet of homemade food so why I'm worrying about vitamins is anyone's guess.

And why does this 1yr+ stuff even exist, does it have ANY benefits?

Thanks all.

I think you are right - marketing ploy. No need for 1 plus milk stuff. They are fine to have full fat cows milk as a main drink after 12m. Or breast milk. oR NO MILK AT ALL, AS LONG AS THEY ARE GETTING PLENTY OF FLUIDS AND A SOURCE OF CALCIUM. oPPs sorry about the random caps

Full fat organic will be cheaper and absolutely fine.

Any benefits - only to the manufacturer, ker-ching!

The 1 year plus formula is a marketing scam.

It has benefits to the manufacturers' profits.

The benefits to a healthy, thriving toddler like yours are ZERO - and for some, as you have found, it brings drawbacks i) overloading of iron leads to constipation which is often painful and uncomfortable ii) flavourings may lead to a dislike of non-added-flavour foods and drinks

UK nutritional guidance is clear - full fat ('whole') milk as a drink after a year is fine. Your HV will confirm all this :)

Thanks everyone, will chuck it out. It stinks anyway, every time I open it the kitchen smells like a cheap vanilla milkshake. I feel liberated now the formula days are over, hurrah!

vanilla flavoured formula? isn't formula revolting enough as it is? And I speak as someone who ff..

Where has all this one plus stuff come from - I don't remember it being around when ds was a baby (he's nine now).

Yep, chuck it out - being formula free is sooo liberating, I was so glad to get shot of it :)
