DS has just latched on successfully for the first time by himself!

He's nearly 19 weeks and refused to feed for the first 48hrs so I expressed colostrum and syringe fed him, before eventually getting him to feed with nipple shields. It's been tough at times especially in the middle of the night until I learnt how to put them on in the dark.

Today I thought I'd give it a go without, and he latched on perfectly and is still feeding well, I'm so chuffed I can't stop smiling!

That is brilliant, spanner - sometimes babies do just 'get it' like this, and it's fantastic when they do :)

Oh thanks for posting this! My twins were born 10 weeks ago at 10 weeks prem and I dream of ditching the shields, so thanks for giving hope and well done little spanner!

Well done both of you, that's brilliant. We're still trying to get rid of nipple shields at 18 weeks, so reading this has given me hope!
