Does a big baby need supplementing with formula?

I had a big baby (nearly 10lbs) and I am breastfeeding him. It's all going well, and he is 4 weeks old and weighs over 12lbs (could even be more but have not had him weighed this week). The health visitor told me that breastfeeding won't be enough for him and I should give him at least one formula feed a day (at 6pm). At the moment I have ignored her advice, as he settles well, has lots of poos/wet nappies and is gaining weight. BUT......has anyone else had a big baby and only breastfed? Should I be supplementing my feeds with formula? Any advice?

I think your health visitor needs reporting, for giving out false information, that could interfear with you baby's breastfeeding.

My son was 9lb5 exclusively breasfed, no problems.

Baby is gaining weight and is healthy. Your HV is spouting nonsense and IMO you should complain about her because the advice she is giving is extremely damaging; lots of women have complete trust in medical professionals and do what they tell them.

DS2 was 9lbs 15 and has been BF exclusively until weaning age. He was fine. Loads of people tried to tell me he needed formula but I didn't listen to their BS advice. You will know if your baby is feeding well and satisfied.

Rubbish. You should contact the team manager and suggest that she probably needs her training updated.

DS is / was 99.6th centile weight & height and was ebf till 6 months (still bf now at 22 m.o. with no problems.
