formula for hungrier babies

My 11wk old has 9-10 feeds a day, which totals to about 1-1.2 litres (36-44ozs) in 24 hours. The longest she'll go at night is the first stretch from 8pm - 12/1am. After that she'll wake up for feeding every 2-3 hours.
I'm going to talk to the HV on friday, but has anyone switched to formula for hungrier babies at this time? I'm concerned that it gives them a higher chance of constipation, but wonder if it will help her go longer between feeds. Or does her feeding pattern sound quite normal? I'm not worried about the waking at night as she goes back to sleep, but she's obviously getting quite hungry.

I used the purple Actimel for dd1 but she refused bottles until she was 5 months (grrrrr) so older than your 11 weeks.

every 3 hours seems normal to me (from memory!) but I b/fed initially and then it was more like every 2.

Had no probs with constipation with Actimel.

I found that my ds drank just as much of the hungrier baby formula, and landed himself with constipation.

Sorry I can't be of more use. One thought is have you tried cluster feeding her between 8 and 10 pm? Ds used to do that, it helped him sleep for longer

I was still exclusively bf at 11wks so I don't know if it is comparable but it sounds like a decent stretch to me. I think you are right to be concerned about constipation to be honest. DD definately had a growth spurt at around this time. I would try to ride it out if I were you, especially as she is settling back down (my DD did same and sleeps quite well now, without night feeds since 20wks) HTH

It was about this time I started to give mine a bit of mashed banana at tea time, and he'd been on the hungrier formula for some time. Worked fine for us.

my DD was going thru the same as yours as she was on Gold SMA so once she turned 8 weeks i put her on White SMA and she started to sleep thru so she was happier (plus i gave her water every other day to stop her constipating)

Nova, 11 weeks old already - aw, bless her

I would definitely not give her food (and banana potentially v allergenic) as she is far too young.

Can you try a dreamfeed at 10.30ish? Might mean she goes a bit longer at night.

novadandypowder · 03/01/2006 15:00

I was dream feeding but she never took that much, then started to refuse it. So now I just wait for her to wake up so she can take a full feed.

She is kind of cluster fed before she goes to bed, as she's feeding every 2.5 hours anyway.

Def. not going to try real food yet! She's on SMA gold at the mo, so it would mean moving her to the white. The HV mentioned it briefly a couple of weeks ago as she'd jumped a centile, gaining nearly 2lbs in 2 weeks. She stabilised for a bit and now she's chunking up again.

olive - It's aptamil not wot you said, which is a probiotic drink for adults.

Seriously, this could be a problem if someone took what you said and then went to buy it!

oliveoil · 04/01/2006 09:01

I blame all those damn diet articles everywhere, must have stuck in my brain somehow. It is a purple box though, I got that bit right!

Yes, tiktok is correct, but I think nova is using SMA anyway so would not move to another brand.

DD1 went onto Cow & Gate Hungrier baby at that age. And started sleeping all night . . .
