Why can't I express anymore?

DS is 4 weeks old and is ebf. I'm thrilled to have got this far and I'm really enjoying it. I have had no trouble getting 2oz a time when I express. On Sunday I got 4oz from one session, then last night could barely express an ounce, even less today. My boobs feel a lot softer but I have read that this can happen as they become more efficient at milk production, but I thought this was later on. Is this correct?

I feed on demand with no particular routine but I do try to make sure he doesn't go more than 3/3.5 hours without a feed. He seems content, sleeps well (lots!) and often has milk dribbling out of his mouth at the end of the feed and I can hear lots of gulps so I am sure I have enough milk for him, but why can't I express all of a sudden? Does this mean my supply may dwindle or is this quite common? Is there anything I can do to improve this so that I may be able to (on the odd occassion) nip out and leave him with DH for a couple of hours.

Thanks in advance. Smile

Sounds more like your supple is seatlying down. A lot of women find they have extra milk in the first few week's. Milk production changes in this time from hormonal dirven to supply and demand driven so yuo produce exactly the amount you DS needs.

Have you been expressing at the same time every day? Some women find it helpfull to do this so your body then think's it's just making an extra feed. Nothing you have said indicates a supply problem.

Your doing a great job.

It's a bit early to express - I think 6 weeks plus is better.

I also found expressing was almost impossible when my periods sort of returned (just before one was due). And when I fell pregnant Wink
