Propranolol and breastfeeding

Just after some reassurance...
I've been diagnosed with thyrotoxicity which means my thyroid has become overactive and I have too much thyroxine in my blood. This has caused some awful symptoms and left me feeling rather dreadful. My GP has been very supportive of me BF has has prescribed me the best medication for BF. I am on propythiouracil for the thyroid issue and today I've been prescribed propranolol which is a beta blocker to help with my fast heartbeat and the shaking.

I've been doing some internet research about propranolol and while some sites say it's safe, others say it can slow the babies heart beat. And I've went and got myself all worried about it. I can't find the medication listed on BfN drugs factsheeets

DD is 20 weeks and I was hoping maybe someone else may have took this medication can help.

Don't know sorry Stinax, have you tried ringing the BFN helpline? They are very good for information on drugs and bfing.

Hope you feel better soon.

I'm watching this thread with interest, as I've just been prescribed it (for migraine) and am currently TTC again after a recent miscarriage.

The neurologist said to me that it would be safe enough to continue until 3rd trimester if I conceived again, but my GP said she would want me to atop taking it when I know I'm pg, so I'm confused about it too.

I'm trying to remember if the neurologist mentioned bf, or if it was something I read later...I shall ask my MIL who came with me as she might remember. Smile

toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT - looks reassuring here. Presumably your GP was ok about it?

tiktok · 07/11/2011 12:21

Floydie the link I posted was about bf only - sometimes drugs and safety is different in pg.

I've just seen my neurologist this morning - I get migraines and am BF Ds (6 weeks)

He said if my migraines come back as badly as before pregnancy he'll put me on propranolol as I've had it before and according to the site he consulted its ok for BF.

I've heard the kellymom website has info about medicines and bf?

Bartimaeus · 07/11/2011 12:27

Floydie you may not need migraine medicine during pregnancy. I had 1 mega migraine per week before pregnancy and 1 every couple of weeks up until around week 16 of pregnancy. For the rest of the pregnancy not even a headache! Was fantastic!

Bartimaeus · 07/11/2011 12:28

www.kellymom.com/health/meds/migraine-meds.html

apparantly its "moderately safe"

Stinax · 07/11/2011 12:29

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. The GP was fine about it, he even showed me the write up about it in his GP bible! It's just me, I'm neurotic Grin

Oh and thanks for the toxnet link tiktok. That'll be good for shutting DH up as he seems to think I need to wean her at 6 months "just to be on the safe side" Hmm

FloydieDoydie - your neurologist is right you can take it while PG, it was the one drug my GP would have been happy to prescibe for my migrines. Luckly being PG and BF has help with my migraines no end, i' hopeing I don't go back to one a week when I stop feeding DS.
