Tea?

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place, but here it goes:
My sister has a 2 and a half week old baby girl and unfortunately only manage to breast feed her for the first week.
Some people say that she should give the baby tea that it will help with cholics and digestion others say don't.
Any ideas?
If yes, which tea should my sister give her?

No to tea. It has tannins in which won't be good for one so little, also think about the caffeine.

If she is unable to breastfeed any more then formula is all that is needed. You don't even need to give them water unless it's very warm.

no need for additional drinks so she should stick to milk whether that is breast/formula milk. There are some things that can be used IF the baby is colicy/windy e.g. dentinox, infacol, etc.

... not even herbal? I wasn't thinking about pg tips Smile

Nothing but breast milk or formula. Certainly not tea!

colditz · 30/10/2011 10:03

No tea, for god's sake. Formula and nothing else for another 5 months. Nothing "herbal" either. Tea is herbal. Coffee is herbal. Heroin, tobacco and marajuana are herbal. None of these things are good for babies.

colditz · 30/10/2011 10:03

Herbal is not synonymous with "Good and nourishing and harmless", it simply means "plant based".

i wouldnt under 6mths, but i know in germany and other european countries they sometimes give them camomile or fennel very weak to help digestion, but maybe their guildines are different?

4madboys · 30/10/2011 10:11

a quick google says not till 6mths and a recomended kind is roobios? but it doesnt have an age guide.

i would wait till 6mths as they only need milk till then, if she has an upset tummy you can try baby massage etc that can be very helpful :)

Would your sister consider starting breastfeeding again? If she only stopped a week and a half ago, this should not be too difficult....ask if you want to know more :)

ok, ok, I get the message Smile. I know that in some countries like Brazil they give newborn babies tea, that's all.
[tiktok] she has completely dried up. My sister suffered a lot when the milk came down, really stressed. Was only able to use one of the nipples because, the other one is inverted, so the usable one was became immediately sore and cracked because, my niece is a "heavy drinker" Wink and she had no one around her to give her some advice.
I think that she maybe gave up too soon, but as I'm here in the UK, I feel that it isn't my place to comment or criticize on her choices. I'm currently pregnant and really really want to breastfeed and will do anything to make it work.
[colditz] I don't think that we can put all herbal teas in the same bag as the examples that you've used. Sure there are some scary ones out there, but coming from a country where they are still vastly used as medicine and work I still put a lot of trust in them. So, newborns shouldn't have tea, I understand that, there's just no need to be so extreme.

Colic? Gripe water might help.

By way of explanation why no teas, it because formula or BM has the right amount of water/nutrients for the child. Too much water can cause an imbalance of electrolytes and tea would be adding additional water.

ninani · 30/10/2011 15:00

Yes, in many countries they do use fennel seeds/aniseed or even cumin seeds. However, even in those counctries even in India where they do consume big amounts of tea they wouldn't give it to babies!! The reason is that tea has tanines and caffeine. Once the paediatrician asked me whether we gave our son tea because he had found something in his blood that suggested so. We hadn't so I didn't understand where they had come from.
