ouch!

Im expressing sometimes to give my pained nips a rest and DS2 (nearly 4 weeks old) seems to prefer the bottle atm as he just fights when hes bfing and his latch isnt great at the mo so is hurting me even more

He has Nystan but the doc didnt give me anything, said to see how we get on and if he gets it again once it clears up THEN they'll treat me

Sooo does anyone have any tips or experiences for me? Can it go on its own or is it likely I'll infect him again? If I express only could that stop re-infection or is it th milk itself thats infected? Iver noticed that the letdown is stinging is this normal? Please enlighten me!

DS2 was born with it (due to me having heavy duty anti-biotics a week before he was born.)

It took 9 months to get rid, but what did it in the end was:

Cut sugar out of my diet
Boil washed my bras and night clothes
Took Diflucan
Used Daktarin on the baby.

Keep a close eye on yourself, I had mastitis 3 times which I think was caused by the bastard thrush. I think, had I not fed DS1 and DD for over a year each, I would have quit with DS2.

Kellymom has some great advice, wish I'd found it several months earlier!

Oh, and IME GPs and HV know sod all about it and think it's trivial. It isn't, it's agonising.

Evil - I am worried about getting mastitis and thats partly why I started expressing, he didnt seem to be taking enough when straight on the boob because his mouth must be so sore, he only seemed to be taking the minimum so the milk was backing up. We are both happier now I express about 1 feed in 3. Not sure how much longer I can bear him being on the boob though, its bloody painful isnt it?

9 months to clear up for you? Shock christ Im struggling now and its only been 3 days!! Hats off to you Smile. Hpoefully this Nystan will clear it up for DS but Ive got a feeling we'll be back as if Ive got it surely I'll reinfect him too. bah!

Will have a nosey on kellymom, thanks for the tip.

This BfN leaflet is very up to date about how to treat thrush.

May be worth printing it out to show to GP. You're right in thinking that if you aren't being treated too, you will just pass it back and forward.

Hope things improve for you soon.

Me and my twins all had it a few weeks ago, i had nystatin for them and a cream for me, the pharmacist gave me canestan, the bf counsellor said she would have asked for something else, the name escapes me, but the canestan worked anyway.

She did ask if we were both being treated because gps have a habit of only treating the baby, which is no use as you say, i would go back to gp, or speak to your pharmacist
