Messy and quick breastfeeds

I've got a 6 week old who seems to be thriving, gaining weight and 6-8 wet nappys and two dirty nappys per day. Recently the feeds have got very messy - my son often pulls off the breast mid feed and milk splurts everywhere. My feeds are also quick he is feeding approx for 10mins (but sometimes as little as 6 minutes) every 2.5-3hours.

The messiness is becoming a bit of an issue - I was out the other day and milk went all over my top and jeans and later in the day I smelt of off milk - lovely!

Has anyone else experienced this, should I be worried? Any ideas as to how I can stop this from happening?

Hi

Sounds like you have a very good milk supply and a lucky baby! This is perfectly normal, some babies 'graze' for 40 mins and some get all they need in 5 minutes, especially if it is coming very fast. Your LO is clearly thriving and managing to cope with the flow, I have the same fast let down and I hold a muslin below my breast to catch any overflow and angle my 4 week old so he is not feeding horizontally but at about a 45 degree angle so he can control the flow a bit better. When not feeding wear breast pads to catch any leaks and remember to change them regularly- I go through 2-3 washable pairs a day!

I have this too - see some of my other threads - my supply seems to have evened out / little one has got used to it, but 10 min feeds (or 6 mins!) are the norm for us too. He is like your baby gaining weight and plenty of wet nappies (up until two days ago plenty of dirty ones too but he hadn't done apoo for couple days now). My son is 8 weeks.

It all sounds fine to me based on our experience, but I know how stressful and worrying it is!

My babies have both done exactly this. Definitely don't worry!

I'm the same but my 6 week old is having trouble with wind especially at night, is that because of the fast flow, if so what to do?
