help! Milk allergy or reflux, or both?!

My DD is 20 weeks old and has just been perscribed Nutramigen Lipil as the GP thinks she may be allergic to cows milk. She was EBF until a few weeks ago when I started to give her formula so that I could get the gaviscon into her. She was also getting extremely upset and distressed when breastfeeding and seemed happier taking a bottle but I couldn't express enough to meet her requirements.
Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with Nutramigen? She had a good feed last night but refused any breakfast and has been a bit fussy this morning, although has had approx 5 oz. She was sick after this though and clearly in pain, shrieking and pulling her ears immediately after this sick, which was quite cottage cheesey! I'm now wondering if she is not allergic to cows milk and just has reflux (although the gaviscon didn't work for long), hence the Nutramigen is not going to have any effect. Am I expecting miracles too quickly?
Sorry, but has been a very stressful few weeks, she was such a happy and content baby for the first 4 months, even with the sickiness, but this last month has been hard!
Any advice gratefully received.

Hi there
Sorry you are having difficulties. My DD has been on Nutramigen since she was around four months too.

She also has severe oesophageal reflux.

We have to give her Carobel to thicken her feeds, as the gaviscon sachets made her very sick indeed, so perhaps that is the first thing to try?

The nutramigen made a big difference fairly quickly for us, but other people I know have got on better with neocate.

My DD is also on ranitidine for her reflux, and gaviscon liquid after every feed.

It is frustrating and hard until you get the medication sorted, I would advise pushing for blood tests to get the CMP Allergy confirmed, and perhaps finding a different thickener as a starting point.

Please PM me if you want to.

Hi OP just wondering how you were getting on.

Hello,
Thank you so much for your advice and support. we actually ended up at the hospital on the thurs as there was some blood on DD's sleep suit after. Went to Gp's who referred us straight away to be on safe side. All fine and we have been told to continue with the Nutramigen and to try 'thick 'n easy' with the feed to keep it down. She is still being sick, but generally seems a lot happier and more settled. we have just been on holiday for a week and she was much better so fingers crossed!
Thanks again.
