can you get someone to check the latch?
it last til about day 5 for me, then changed latch slightly and it was gone

popsycalindisguise · 14/12/2005 12:49

do you have any lansinoh cream in the meantime?

NotQuiteCockney · 14/12/2005 12:51

Are you sure it's latch? Or is it when you let down?

How long does the pain last for? Do you have cracked nipples? Are your nipples a funny shape when they come out?

I would get someone to check the latch, just to be safe.

(I had bad letdown pain with DS1 and worse letdown pain with DS2.)

Cristina7 · 14/12/2005 12:56

Wow, I'd forgotten about the pain. For me it was from the letdown, lasted a few weeks, maybe a couple of months or so, got better with time.

NotQuiteCockney · 14/12/2005 12:57

Yeah, I think my letdown pain was at its worst, a few weeks in, and then got better over a few months. At six months, I don't think I even felt it.

Once I knew it was just letdown pain, and didn't mean my nipple was falling off, it was easier to cope with.

Jasnem · 14/12/2005 13:02

Mine lasted six weeks. I remember phoning a helpline when it stopped hurting as I thought something was wrong!

Toe curling is exactly the right description.

Busyalexsmummy · 14/12/2005 13:04

i think it is let-down pain, have had cracked nipples and bleeding nipples, and have sorted out his latch, it hurts for about 8secs/first 10 sucks or so, then goes....

sounds like let down.....

I still get let down pain ut it isnt really pin...i cn just feel it..think it is normal to feel it but the pain does go

popsycalindisguise · 14/12/2005 13:05

where exactly does it hurt...in your nipples or within your boobs?

NotQuiteCockney · 14/12/2005 13:05

Do you sometimes get the pain when you're not feeding? (And then get leaking?)

Do you get the pain when you pump?

Does it feel like someone's poking a big nasty needle into your nipples?

If your nipples aren't sore, then this is probably letdown, in which case, you have my sympathy! But it will sort itself out, and it isn't a bad thing.

Nips took a fair while to toughen up - I've forgotten already how long but at least six weeks. Let down pain settled down around the same time too. I am fair skinned though and some people think that can make a difference. Ds is 18 weeks now and I have no pain whatsoever (well apart from the last two days because of a blocked duct but that's a different story).

Persevere - breastfeeding during the first month bears no resemblance to breastfeeding subsequently - get through this crappy painful bit and it will become soooo much easier. Don't give up

dulwichmummy · 14/12/2005 19:19

I tried to let my nips hit the air for as long as poss at the start (admittedly this was April and I didn't have half the family over for christmas ) but found it helped with soreness. I also found if I got a crack that leaving some milk on it to dry naturally helped a lot.

Hope you feel better soon.
