Eye Infection (??) and EBM

DS2 has got icky yellow gunk coming out of both eyes (along with the whole lice problem!). His eyes don't seem red, they are a bit swollen maybe.

So I'm planning on putting some breast milk into his eyes, as that won't do any harm, and might help.

Only I never really got the knack of hand-expressing, and I only barely leak now. So I was planning on expressing with the pump.

Am I right in thinking that the milk should be as fresh as possible, and not refrigerated, before being put in his eyes?

BUMP incase an answer is still needed

Don't know about freshness, but he will rebel if refrigerated stuff is put in his eyes as the cold will be quite unpleasant. But it doesn't need to be sterile, so it should be ok just to grab the pump for a few seconds' pumping. OTOH, you only need a few drops per eye - could you not manage that with your hands? I expressed straight into dd's eyes.

I've never managed to hand-express.

I finally did this today, used the pump, got an oz or so, and then dribbled it into DS2's eyes, and DS1's eyes, too. Who told me it was "a bit weird", but it didn't hurt, anyway.

(Pumping was harder than I expected. I hadn't pumped for ... 6 months? At least? And having DS1 standing in front of me watching, and saying "can I work the handle? when is the milk coming? are you really going to put milk in my eye?")

We'll see if it works. DS2's eyes got better, a bit, but are still gunky and puffy (yellow gunk). DS1's eyes started to itch today, too.

LOL. How old are they?

NotQuiteCockney · 09/12/2005 13:44

DS1 is 4, DS2 is 14 months.

DS1's not complaining about his eyes any more. And DS2's eyes do look a bit better. I'm not sure either of them had conjunctivitis, but as long as they're getting better, it's all fine.

In my experience conjunctivitus clears by itself, just resist the urge to clean the gunk away; that only adds more germs to the mix... a little drop of EBM may help, too.
