Slightly odd question I know but Id love to know if anyone has ever bf a child not their own? A friends child maybe? Are there any health implications? And does it matter if your child and the other child are different ages (im thinking about milk composition changing as your baby grows up)?

I haven't but have offered (friend is still pregnant). Have also offered up DS's powers of vacuum extraction as a supply booster to the same friend if needed.

My Mum and her sister had me and my cousin a few days apart, and when babysitting so the other could have a break, would breast-feed the other's baby if necessary. People used to think it was weird when I told them that story, but I think it was more common years ago.

scrivette that's a great idea. After nearly 11 weeks I've lost all faith in my ability to know what I'm meant to be doing and he's only really ever done it "right" once, immediately after the TT release. It would actually be really helpful to borrow someone else's baby to see what it's like, except we have thrush at the moment!

Thrush (undiagnosed) could be an issue?

I have. My friend and I used to take turns looking after both the babies for an hour or two when they were small & boob obsessed. Stopped after they were 6 months or so & could go longer without a feed. It was brilliant being able to leave a needy little baby with someone who could utterly supply those needs. It was any nipple in a storm as far as our ones were concerned, & funnily enough they both had very similar behaviour on the boob.

I haven't, but would have done so happily if asked. I've also provided expressed milk for a friend to syringe feed a newborn at one point.

MinnieBar · 31/07/2011 21:25

Not directly but I did express once a day (so one feed, roughly) for a friend for a few months. As long as both mothers are happy I don't see a problem.

I haven't but would without hesitation and would gladly have DD fed by someone else if needed.

In Islam, if a woman feeds anothers baby as well as her own, it makes them siblings.

My sister agreed that if need be, I could nurse her dd when I was watching her.

I've offered her a couple of times, but she has never actually latched on.

I breastfed my sisters ds back in may when she went into hospital for spinal surgery. She was out of action for three weeks so expressed to keep her supply and I bf her ds until she was able to sit upright again.

It was great but I was also bfing my own ds who was 14 mo at the time and was most perplexed at having to share booby!

My dn latched on no problem (he was 20 weeks) and actually put on loads of weight when I fed him so my sister cheekily suggested I carried on Grin

I think it is a lovely thing to be able to do, I got a lot of pleasure from it and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
