One boob producing more than the other?

Am 37 weeks and leaking like a sieve. But one boob is leaking more than the other. Could this be a problem once baby arrives?

No. Boobs are very rarely even - often let-down is stronger one side than the other - your baby might have a preference for one side, but with different feeding positions, you can trick the little blighter

Don't fret!

jellyjelly · 25/11/2005 18:26

Dont worry it will sort itself out when little one arrives.

merryberry · 25/11/2005 19:28

if you ask you'll find as i did that nearly every woman has a boob which is smaller and produces less milk on the side of the hand she uses most frequently. one of those things.

hunkermunker · 25/11/2005 20:48

EPIS, boobs really are quite brilliant things - not sure if you read at the time, but DS was only feeding one-sided for a few weeks before he self-weaned (while I was pg) - and one of my boobs was producing milk for him, the other had already gone into colostrum production! A few weeks after he stopped feeding, both produced colostrum.

Just trust your body - it's growing and nourishing your baby now and will continue to do so after he or she is born (can't believe you're 37 weeks now, btw - that's gone quickly - for me!).

Tatties · 25/11/2005 20:50

Wow Merryberry, is that true? I am right-handed and pre-pg my right boob has always been very slightly smaller, and now I'm BF it is noticeably more so, especially when ds is due a feed on the left side!

Tatties · 25/11/2005 20:52

HM, that's amazing. What clever bodies we have, eh?

suzi2 · 25/11/2005 21:45

I have a good boob & a crap boob - quite normal I believe. Good boob (left) is huge! HM - no position change seems to fool my DS! I might try a handstand - that might work

merryberry · 26/11/2005 18:06

Seems to be true for the majority. Interestingly, my smaller, less popular (with the baby!) boob is the one which leaked when my milk came in, the left one only ever leaked once, when they both went mad during a huge thunderstorm in gozo. we are odd but brilliant creatures!

NotQuiteCockney · 26/11/2005 18:08

Oh, I hadn't known "bad boob" was always on your preferred hand. And always the slightly smaller one.

But yeah, true for me, as well.

mears · 26/11/2005 18:38

Totally normal expat. I don't think it necessarily means one boob is producing more than the other - I think one 'lets down' better than the other. I always could express loads from my right boob and only dribbles from the left. Babes fed off of them equally well though

expatinscotland · 26/11/2005 18:53

Cool. I'm mostly left-haded - write and eat w/left hand, and it's that boob that is REALLY leaky. The other I have to squeeze to get it going, but the left I just have to take off my bra and it gets going.

I'm going to try expressing and freezing tonight. I just finished up a course of antibiotics for an ear infection on Thursday, had scan on Wednesday, and baby was spot on 37 weeks and 6.5+lbs.

Hmm, I could always express better from the "good boob", and had latch issues with the "bad" one. The reservoirs seem bigger, too - it gets a tiny bit engorged even now, sometimes. (DS2 is 14 months).

jabberwocky · 26/11/2005 19:20

I'm opposite. "Good" boob was my left and I'm righthanded. Go figure. But, I'm left eye dominant. Hmmm...

NotQuiteCockney · 26/11/2005 19:25

No, jabberwocky, that's the standard style - bad boob is on the same side as your good hand - so for most women, left boob is (maybe) better.

aloha · 26/11/2005 19:52

Desmond Morris says women usually carry babies on the left as well - even left handed babies.
he thinks he breast thing might be due to a head-turning preference by babies - it's easier to turn your head to the right rather than left (true in my case).
Also maybe something to do with heartbeat.

TicTacsMum · 26/11/2005 20:03

Expat - you're expressing & freezing? I didn't know you could do that - i'm 38 weeks and leaking too. Can I keep it? Will it be colostrum that i'm producing?

Actually, after hearing about Terri Hatcher using cow's colostrum as a beauty product I wondered whether it would smooth out some wrinkles around my eyes and have actually tried it! Thought it was a shame to let it go to waste!!!

expatinscotland · 26/11/2005 20:18

Yep! Am expressing and freezing as of now.

That's dead interesting. Will try it tonight and see how much I get! How much are you getting?

expatinscotland · 26/11/2005 20:45

Not much! But apparently you don't need much, either. I got 2mL so far.

OP posts:
TicTacsMum · 27/11/2005 16:33

I tried last night, just out of interest and got 5ml. I had to throw it away as I hadn't sterilised the cup but it was really weird - I found i got more out of the boob that doesn't leak as much - bizarre!
