How often should I use an electric breast pump

I am trying a mixture of bottle (ebm) and breast (poss once or twice a day), and I have just purchased a Medela electric breast pump. Does anybody know how often I need to pump my breasts to maintain a good supply of milk? I don't really want to resort to using formula too often.

Also, as a rough guide, am a bit confused about how much bottled milk to feed my baby. He is 9 days old. MW says between 60-90ml at a feed, but he was 8lb 12 at birth, dropping to 8lb 4 after his first weigh-in after 5 days. Aptimil box says I should be feeding him upto 120ml. He seems to always want more, however much we feed him, but seems to go quite a while between feeds. Ideally I'd like him to have less more often.

Thanks in advance!

Don't know anything about it sorry first but a BFC would be able to talk you through this, have you called one of the helplines?

In the early days you need to express 8 to ten times a day including in the night. I guess if you breastfeed twice you could make it 6 to 8 times a day.

Sorry not sure about amounts but I think FF babies tend to have larger feeds less often that BF babies. Can you just offer a small amount and then offer more if he doesn't seem content?
