Less windy and constipated on Breast Milk?

Hi

My 4 week old is currently being both breast fed and formula fed. However for the past few weeks she has been very windy, farty and constipated. She often wakes during the night being bloated and windy which in turn keeps up awake, it often unsettles her.

We make sure we wind her well after feeding and keep her upright for about 30 mins after feeding, but when we put her down she really struggles and kicks her legs and flings herself about, often farting alot. Also, she only poos every 2-3 days.

She very rarely vomits so we dont think its reflux.

I have bought myself a electric breast pump and am trying to build up my supply to feed her myself exclusively. Does anyone have the same issue and has cutting out the formula worked.

I know that many people will say that breast is best and believe me I agree, but I am looking for views of people who have experienced the same thing.

Thanks in advance x

Babies' digestive systems are immature and it is not uncommon for the healthiest, most contented babies to be farty. Behaving in a different way (arms flailing etc) when put down is also perfectly normal at 4 weeks.

Having said that, my DS1 could not tolerate formula because he was lactose intolerant - though we didn't know that at the time. He was ok with my milk but any small amount of formula would upset him badly. Again, not uncommon though some non lactose intolerant babies are better on different brands of formula.

Good luck with increasing your milk supply. Ultimately it is the kindest thing for almost every babies' stomach....but not a miracle for removing wind. You may just have a farty child, sorryGrin

I've just re-read my post and seen that I made an apostrophe errorShock

Thank you, I use the ready made formula (she would wake all of Suffolk if we had to wait for kettle to boil etc ) so can rule out the formula water ratio. Thank you anyway.

Its not the farting that bothers us its that she seems so uncomfortable and is often awake most of the night in discomfort.

Thanks x
