Help. My 9 day old who up until now has been an excellent feeder (breast) has not fed properly since 8am, she went for 20 minutes had a quick comfort feed just before 10am and hasn't fussed since. I tried waking her at 12 she wasn't interested and tried again at 2. She has been going 3 to 3.5 hours between feeds up until now. Help Please

Could you phone NHS 24 to ask for some advice?

Or is there a Breastfeeding helpline? Will have a look.

Found this National Breastfeeding Helpline 0300 100 0212 on the NHS website. Won't do any harm to speak with someone.

3 to 3.5 hours is a long time for a newborn to go between feeds. Has she been weighed? Lots of wet/dirty nappies?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/05/2011 15:17

Has she been having plenty of wet and dirty nappies? How are her nappies today?

Sometimes babies do change their pattern for no reason but it might be worth speaking to a Breastfeeding Counsellor, have you called one yet?

Thought you might also find this useful on Kellymom, especially the bit on sleepy babies.

At 9 days old, any issues like this need the midwife's input - by all means contact bf helpline(s) but they should be suggesting you call the midwife as well.

Best to do this straight away as if there is a prob it is best nipped in the bud.

scaryfairy28 · 22/05/2011 17:23

My 10 day old can go three / four hours between feeds midwife suggested stripping her off to feed her if she goes 4 hours. Of course she only ever goes 4 hours during the day normally!!

RitaMorgan · 22/05/2011 17:30

Does she make up for it at night? Sometimes very new babies don't ask for feeds as often as they need them.

Biggem · 22/05/2011 17:56

She has woken up and cluster fed this afternoon and seems fine...the midwife is coming tomoz so I will ask her what she thinks.

There's some good info here on Kellymom about breastfeeding a newborn, and how frequently they should be feeding.

Biggem · 22/05/2011 19:19

Thanks for the link Rita. I do think that there is so much info/advice out there that it's difficult to know where you are with it all!

Definitely, especially since midwives don't know much about breastfeeding - before I had ds I had assumed they were experts and would have had some indepth training on infant feeding!

Biggem · 23/05/2011 17:00

Just an update, she did it again today so I called a breastfeeding helpline...they said that with her weight gain it's nothing to worry about but not to let her go more than 5hrs but otherwise im just lucky. Glad I called them though.

What is the weight gain, Biggem?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 25/05/2011 07:42

Biggem I understand what you mean about there being so much information, what I always tried to look for was evidence based advice which you can get at Kellymom and NCT, there are others too. A BFC will aslo give you evidence based information too. There are some BFC on here as well, tiktok is one of them.
