Mastitis lump not going away

DD is 6 weeks old and ebf. Everything was fine until around 10 days ago when I developed a slightly tender lump in my right breast. I've had similar lumps before which have disappeared quickly with frequent feeding, massaging, heat pads etc. This one hasn't. 3 days ago I began to feel fluey and I saw the GP (probably should've gone sooner) who diagnosed mastitis and prescribed antibiotics (erythromicin). I also saw a breastfeeding counsellor who helped correct DD's latch as it wasn't 100% perfect on the affected side.

The lump, however, remains as bad as ever and if anything has got bigger and more painful. I'd say it's about the size of a small chicken's egg. I've been taking the antibiotics for nearly 72 hours now and they have done nothing. The usual self-help methods such as massage, heat, hot bath/shower, breast combing and frequent feeding followed by expressing have also made no difference. I'm also taking the maximum dosage of ibuprofen and paracetamol to help deal with the pain and flu symptoms.

To make matters worse DD is refusing to nurse at the affected breast this morning so i'm having to pump which is obviously less efficient. Up until then I think her latch was much better but I guess she doesn't like the taste of the milk!

Sorry this has become such a pity party. I guess my question is has this happened to anyone else and if so what did you do? Also what happens if the lump doesn't go away? I've had it for 10 days now so beginning to lose hope. Any suggestions would be very gratefully received!

TIA

could you try cooling it? I thought heat encouraged milk production, so an ice-pack or cabbage leaves might help.

Have you checked that you haven't got a milk blister (skin over a nipple hole)? This might be making the milk back up.

milk blister

hope you are feeling better soon Smile

Sorry to hear you're going through this - I've just updated my thread so it should be up high (the 'mastitis for 14 days' thread, if you can see it?)

Hopefully it won't be the same for you, but I would go back to the GP every other day until you're better

Get lots and lots of rest (something I should have done) and treat yourself gently

Thanks for your replies. I've been hunting for a milk blister but there's nothing there, which is a shame as popping them seems to bring instant relief which sounds wonderful!

Bigpinkellie, I've just read your thread, my goodness I could've written your original post up to the bit where the skin started peeling off the lump. You poor thing, hope you're feeling better now.

Well the lump is still there and is as big and angry as ever despite expressing and getting DD to feed off it as much as possible (albeit very fussy feeds). I'm going back to the GP tomorrow, hope I don't get fobbed off. Worried it could be an abcess but I guess the sooner it's treated the better.
