Exercising whilst breastfeeding

A friend of mine is a really keen surfer and is about to go to South Africa where there will be lots of surfing going on.

She's bfing her 7 month DD and is concerned that if she goes surfing her milk could start to dry up. (She's been told that about exercise in general).

Is she right? I told her you're a wise bunch so you would have the answer...

TIA

Blimey that's one I hadn't heard. Anyway Kellymom says no: www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/mom-exercise.html

I run 20 miles a week and no issues with me!

I always get really dehydrated when I surf. She might want to watch that.

I think surfing while breastfeeding would be pretty tricky. You would want a really good sling, and some way to keep the baby's head out of the water. Grin

Seriously, though, if you suddenly take up a huge amount of exercise, I think your milk can taste a bit odd, (I remember DS1 was unkeen while I was doing a rockclimbing course) but it won't do any harm, or dry up!

my friend and fellow black belt in martial arts was told that her relaxin levels would still be high during breastfeeding so that loose ligaments might be a problem for martial arts. i would imagine this would apply to surfing too.

anybody know if this is true??

japhrimel · 18/05/2011 21:54

Nonsense on the milk front, but she will need to be more careful because of the relaxin and make sure her boobs are as empty as possible before exercising otherwise it really hurts.

japhrimel · 18/05/2011 21:55

I don't think relaxin is related to bfing. I'm hypermobile and was told to take extra care for 12 months post-partum whether I bf or not.

I play football and no ones every said anything about not exercising whilst bf.
Only to be careful of ligaments etc.

Started back training after 6wks and playing at 4mths with my dd1 and ds1
I fed them prior to the match and straight after.

I go to the gym twice a week and regularly cycle and run and supply is fine!

TurtlesAreRetroRight · 19/05/2011 13:34

I ran 4 times a week while bfing and cycled everywhere. It's fine.

Relaxin stays in your system that bit longer when bfing.
